CBC News

Three Canadian warships, a coast guard vessel and three Sea King helicoptors will be sent to Louisiana on Tuesday with relief supplies for the U.S. Gulf Coast.

Defence Minister Bill Graham made the announcement from Moscow, Russia.

The Canadian Coast Guard Ship Sir William Alexander will sail along with the Canadian Navy vessels, HMCS Athabaskan, HMCS Ville De Quebec and HMCS Toronto.

Naval crews were busy loading gear on to the ships in Halifax Friday as 1,000 personnel prepared to head to waters off New Orleans.

I mean, they're already HERE.

I understand that it takes a while to get them stocked with relief supplies, but 5 DAYS???

You guys were ready to go a couple of days ago...the idiot-in-chief just wouldn't give you permission.

BTW, my thanks to your country for helping us regardless of what asses our administration have been,

19. Still Waiting
With DART.

Canadian Forces on standby to help U.S. aid efforts: Hillier

Chief of Defence Staff General Rick Hillier said Thursday the Canadian Forces have been put on standby to help the United States deal with the aftermath of hurricane Katrina.

Gen. Hillier said he notified his American counterparts that Canada was prepared to offer whatever assistance was needed. He also noted that the Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART), which was deployed in the Asian tsunami earlier this year, was put on a one-hour notice in Kingston, Ont.

Guess that the requirements are for things other than DART.

Being part of an international community means accepting help when you need it...not just giving aid.

Not only is he doing a disservice to our own people, he's snubbing our own friends when they want to help us.

95. USN response
ACtually one of our ships, the Bataan was there tuesday, 5 more departed Norfolk Wednesday and another left today. It takes about 4 days to sail from Norfolk to New Orleans. The Canadian ships won't be leaving port til Tuesday. Not to belittle the Canadian contribution. Its very kind of them to help.

127. Of course, that was even revenge

The burning of the White House was simple revenge for the Americans burning the Canadian town of York.

One of the main reasons for the War of 1812 was because the US simply wanted to own Canada. Of course, the President convinced the public the reason for the War to protect the US from Indian raids. Some things never change.

21. Maybe
But a few facts from 50 years ago. Canada had the third largest navy in the world.

The Canadian Armed Forces: The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN)
By war's end, the Royal Canadian Navy had grown into one of the world's great navies -- 100,000 men and women and 365 warships. Just six years earlier, it had been tiny, with only 3500 permanent and part-time ('reserve') members and six modern destroyers and four minesweepers. The growth was rapid and enormous, and with it came huge problems in training people and readying ships for sea, some of which led to tragic losses of men and ships.

The Canadian navy's main work, using small, versatile Canadian-built antisubmarine warships known as corvettes, was as an escort force for the merchant ships whose Atlantic Ocean cargoes were vital to Britain's survival. This force played a decisive part in defeating the German submarines (U-boats) from deep in the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the Arctic Circle and the Mediterranean Sea. The RCN contributed mightily to other major operations, such as the landing of Allied armies on the coast of German-occupied France on 6 June 1944. ( See D-Day and the Normandy Campaign) One major Canadian warship also saw action in the bitterly-fought battles against Japan in the Pacific. The RCN lost 24 ships, mostly in the Atlantic, during the war.

Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 09:22 PM by Canadian Socialist
I'm an "army brat". My dad always said that the best sailors came from the "landlocked" provinces (AB and SK). He figures it's because the people that signed up from there were tired of the "endless" vistas of watching your dog run away for a week. At least the ocean moves. Actually, he also said that any soldiers from the prairies were the best... they could shoot a gopher (using a .22 - the people had the .22 not the gophers) through the eye from a mile away (hyperbole, I know). They also were able to weather (no pun intended) any kind of discomfort. I've been in Saskatchewan in the winter. Anything would be better than that.

55. Some Dry Humor
W. O. Mitchell

Reprinted from Who Has Seen the Wind by W. O. Mitchell:

Forbsie's fat face shone. "Do we have to line up?" he said to Artie.

"Everybody does," Artie answered, his face contorting at the offending glasses. "The girls go in the girls' door an' the boys go in the boys' door. You better not let 'em catch you going in the girls' door."

"Why not?" asked Brian.

"You're not s'posed to. There's two toilets. There's the girls' toilet on the girls' side -- an' the boys' on the boys' side -- in the basement."

and it may be an urban legend, that "Cajun" is a corruption of the word "Canadian". Actually, I pronounce "Canadian" very similar to "Cajun". i.e. "I'm Canajun, eh." IIRC, "Cajun" (the language" is also very similar to Quebecois (the language). Quite different from French "french".

35. Yes indeedy
"Evangeline is an 1847 epic poem by American writer Henry Wadsworth Longfellow; it also is the name of the poem’s heroine, who in Cajun Louisiana has taken on mythological status. Longfellow’s work was loosely based on the 1755 expulsion of the Acadians from Nova Scotia (known as Le Grand Dérangement), the arrival of some of those Acadians in south Louisiana, and their efforts to find loved ones from whom they were separated."

34. from one account of the Acadian expulsion ...
""By noon, the 5th of September, the beach was piled with boxes, baskets and bundles; behind them were crowds of weeping women and children; children crying for their mothers, and mothers looking for their children; sick men and bedridden women were carried by strong maidens, or tipped out of their carts which bore them to the spot.

A little before highwater the prisoners in the church were ordered to form six deep and march to the place of embarkation; they refused to obey the command. The troops were ordered to fix bayonets and advance on the prisoners. This act produced obedience, and they commenced to march. When they came to the beach, and saw their property, their mothers, wives, children, and sisters kneeling on each side of the road, one long, loud wail of anguish went up from them..."

http://www.wesleyan.edu/av/cellar.html

The historical ironies are unbelievable. Descendants of those Acadians remain in Louisiana (a few managed to make it back to Canada after voyages that lasted for decades) -- and they are experiencing some very similar things right now.

36. Another sad event in history

"The roaring wind off the bay evokes a history of suffering and endurance. In a solemn pilgrimage, Acadians from around the world retrace their ancestors' steps in reverse, converging on Canada's East coast. Here Acadian Culture is kept alive through song and literature, art and cuisine.

More than three centuries ago, Acadians in Atlantic Canada were caught between feuding French and British colonies. In a series of expulsions, their descendants were deported from Acadia to France, England and colonies on the east coast of the United States. Many families were torn apart and remained separated for generations.

This summer, Nova Scotia will see the largest cultural event in its history: the World Acadian Congress 2004. Two hundred fifty thousand of the world's ten million Acadian descendants are expected to participate. Hundreds of family reunions are scheduled during the celebration, which takes place during Mi-Careme (mid-Lent) and culminates in High Mass on the Feast of the Assumption, August 15th, the official Acadian National Holiday."

52. The eagle as a national symbol
Hmmm... have to think about that. I think the beaver is much more appropriate. It's an industrious animal, that builds dams (which, in the present circumstances, is most appropriate). As well, it is a vegetarian and does not prey on other animals. See where I'm going with this?

In addition, a new name has to flow off the tongue in both official languages. The United Provinces of Canamerica = Les provences (sp?) unite (lacks the accent grave) du Canamerica. Plus, somewhere we have to throw in the British royalty. The Royal United Provinces of Canamerica = Les provences royale unite du Canamerica. Just my thoughts on a very deep issue. Just trying to lighten up a very bleak situation.

BTW, peanut butter = buerre d'arachide.

58. If we were going to change the beaver
I'd go with the polar bear...northern, private, unassuming...but when they stand up they're 10 feet tall. Surprise!

However, I think the beaver suits us.

A beaver is a builder, a great engineer, gets the job done, family loving...and whatever color they are under their fur coats, or whatever their sexual orientation...nobody gives a dam.

however, they ARE such magnificant animals. They are VERY large predators that see humans as meat. One swipe of those paws, you are dead. I've been up close and personal with these guys. They do not care that we are smarter or more cunning. We are very small seals that they can eat. In their natural habitat, we have no chance against them (I'm talking about the average North American, not about the Inuit, who have lived and thrived in that environment for thousands of years).

In Churchill. Scary shit. Those guys will go through a wood door as if it's paper. If they're hungry and they smell food... The guys that lived up there always had a very large shotgun at the ready. My favourite story about Churchill is, at Hallow'een, the kids go out trick or treating with an armed guard. As well, they are told not to dress like seals. Because at that time of year, the polar bears are migrating, and guess what? Churchill is right in their traditional route to the sea.

88. my favourite Churchill polar bear story ...
I worked up there a few summers and heard this from some of the locals. There was a guy who used to live out past the dump (I'm pretty sure it was around there, not as far as Twin Lakes) who figured out a way to keep the bears from tearing up his door and windows. He drove dozens of long sharp nails through wooden planks, and would fasten those planks over his shutters and even put them sharp ends up on the steps leading up to his door. Any bear getting close enough to touch those spikes would be put off, he figured.

And apparently it worked -- right up until the day he heard something outside at night, grabbed his gun, and raced out his front door without bothering to put on his boots ... completely forgetting about those spiked planks.

When Bush described setting up the Department of Homeland Security, this is the first image that entered my mind.

Who went to Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant and, actually, thinks grads of both of those -- other -- schools tend to be asses (the ones from Ann Arbor somewhat more so than the ones from East Lansing).
Which is another way of saying I was too stoopid to get admitted at either of them.

at least the part that we aren't going to help. Several Canadian organisations ARE coming to help. The Canadian Armed Forces (Sea Command) is coming as well as the Vancouver (BC) urban disaster unit (which my sister is a part of - she's an B.N. R.N. with a lot of experience in third world conditions, emerg. triage, etc.). Also, the Mennonite Conference is sending help (from Winnipeg). The Mennonite Conference is an NGO (similar to Doctors without borders). The only thing is that these emergency units were requested by the Governor of Louisiana, not by Bush. Well except for the RCN. It was state to province level of protocal.

115. I have Canadian roots -- Scottish/English actually -- and so have...
probably much more appreciation than the average U.S. citizen for Canadian traditions. The cross-border difference in the "vibes" between the imperial, intolerantly fascist U.S. and live-and-let-live Canada is palpable -- even allowing for the English/French schism. I may yet have to seek refuge there: read some of my posts and you'll see why.
