Tulane University cancels fall semester
http://www.tulane.edu/

September 2, 5 p.m.

Dear friends of Tulane,

Since my relocation to Houston, I have had more access to information about the situation in New Orleans. I was hopeful that recovery would soon progress. However, given the ongoing situation in the city, I am forced to make an extremely difficult decision – Tulane University cannot hold a fall semester on its campus.

Dallas has opened up it's classes to all displaced Tulane students at no cost. They are "sister schools" or something like that.

thank you for this...tulane's website had been down since monday...it breaks my heart...i agree it will probably be more than 1 semester, but i'm sure the agreement needs to be explicitly as short-term as possible and will be reviewed, if necessary...

i am sad for my school...

10. neighboring schools also affected ...
My co-worker, whose sister teaches at one of the Mississippi colleges, said that a number of faculty members are heading down south, to help with the relief effort or look for family members -- she's helping cover their classes while they're away.

Her research area is geographical information systems, and apparently the state approached her for some help with mapping flooded areas. The job they described is one which she knew the military already has databases and specialists for ... when she pointed this out, the official on the phone told her "there aren't any military here ... NOBODY is doing this, and we have to scramble to find trained staff ourselves". She might end up being pressed into service herself.

15. I'm going to talk to the librarians at my university ...
If Tulane loses a lot of its collection, perhaps they could help replace some of the volumes? (I imagine that the public libraries in New Orleans will have been affected too -- I know the chief at my local branch -- I wouldn't be surprised if something is already in the works.)

19. Library at Tulane
I'm a librarian so I was concerned about that too. Is Tulane in the flooded area? I thought from the reports I heard it was not flooded. The last I knew before they cancelled the semester students and faculty were advised to keep their doors locked, both interior and exterior, and stay indoors. I got the impression from that order that they were not in a flooded area but in an area that was likely to be looted.

On a related note, Texas A&M at College Station is taking 1000 displaced students from Louisiana.

28. Tulane is in the part of town with minimal flooding
From what I have heard, including from Tulane's president on the school's website, the campus did not suffer from significant flooding. It is in the area of town, including the campus, that is literally covered with hugh oak trees. Apparently, almost every 10 feet there is an oak tree down. This part of town (called "uptown") probably has more damage from wind and trees than from floods.

29. are there other institutions which have been flooded?
I recall hearing about some students trapped in a dorm by the rising waters -- if they're from another school, their library may have fared worse.

31. interllibrary loan
There was a univerisity a few years ago, I think in Colorado, that flooded and they used interlibrary loan for over a year to get stuff. I'm sure they got the essentials right away but for most complicated research stuff they just borrowed from other libraries.

24. They can study at other universities.
Practically all major universities are offering spaces (and even housing) to Tulane and Loyola students. All they have to do is ask.

Many schools on the quarter system haven't even started yet, so undergrads should be fine at another school.

Due to ABA regs, law students need to hurry up and apply to visit. They can't miss more than 20% of classes and most schools have already started.

If Tulane or Loyola students are ready to continue their studies, schools all over the country are opening their doors.

27. Tulane's Library
is a national treasure...

As the resource library (it took over the LA Library years ago), it has French, US, and other documents dating back to the founding of LA.

It has by far the best french document library in the states. Much of what they had is not replaceable.

34. Any Penna. residents who go to any "Katrina"-region university
Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 11:06 PM by gauguin57
can go to Pennsylvania's state-owned or state-related universities, tuition-free. Just announced a couple of days ago by the Commonwealth of Penna.

That's if you're a PA resident, but were going to school at a college or university shut down by Katrina.
