New Orleans Paper Slams Federal Response on Saturday

By E&P Staff

NEW YORK The Times-Picayune of New Orleans, in publishing its second print edition of the week on Saturday from its new base in Houma, lashed out in an editorial at federal relief efforts so far, even as help and supplies finally started to arrive.

"It's good to hear the president admit his administration's shortcomings, and it's even better to hear his promise to help all of us who are in need," the editorial declared. "But the sad truth remains that the federal government's slow start has already proved fatal to some of the most vulnerable people in the New Orleans area. Water has killed hundreds, if not thousands, of people. A lack of water to drink is exacting its toll on others.

"We applaud the mayor for giving voice to an entire city's frustration. How could the most powerful and technologically advanced nation in the history of the world have responded so feebly to this crisis?

"The president's admission of his administration's mistakes will mean nothing unless the promised help is deployed immediately. Each life is precious, and there isn't a second chance to save a single one of them. No more talk of what's going to happen. We only want to hear what is being done. The lives of our people depend on it."

1. BushCo's "feeble" response
That's the word. They found the word to describe BushCo's failed response to Katrina: feeble.

3. It's pretty fucking sad
to see that, Like Mayor Rudy on 9/11, our strongest leadership in this crisis comes from another major city mayor instead of our "president."

5. This president is incompetent
and so is the rest of his administration. The press has been afraid to buck him but they are not elected so they better do a good job or they are out on their asses. Make your views known to the papers and the TV loony tunes. They are going to make the gulf coast like a vacation spot for the very rich now that the New Orleans area is ruined. Leave it to bush to make money for his friends. He has to go lets make him resign.

11. UNCONSCIONABLE!
That is the only word that even comes close to describing the federal government's (that means you, you louse ridden Chimp) response.

Citizens all over this country are horrified ... There are stories from all over the country of citizens and local governments desperately wanting to help ... and the help being turned down by the fed's and their representatives ...

Was this racism or classism? At the federal level: YES ... the citizens (black, white ... ): NO, "everyone" wanted help to get to these people ...

UNCONSCIONABLE!

14. Disgusting stories about aid being actively turned away--
I'm sure this link appears elsewhere on DU, but from the Fredericksburg (VA--BIG RED STATE) Freelance-Star (http://www.fredericksburg.com/News/Web/2005/092005/0902deputies)

"LEESBURG, Va. (AP) - A group of Loudoun County sheriff's deputies heading to Louisiana to help maintain order among hurricane refugees had to turn around at the Virginia border when they couldn't get confirmation from emergency management officials, the Loudoun County sheriff said.

After attempting for 12 hours to reach officials at the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Louisiana Emergency Operations Center, the deputies were told to head home. The group of 22 officers and six emergency medical technicians was expected to arrive back in Leesburg by 2 a.m. Friday, according to a statement from the sheriff's office.

"How many people have to die in the interim while they try to make this happen?" Sheriff Stephen O. Simpson told WRC-TV."

Neighboring Fairfax Co. has a highly-trained cadre of search and rescue personnel who have responded over the years to earthquakes in Turkey, IIRC....WTF????

22. INDICT BUSH NOW
* is a turd on the dung heap of history and the freaks and parasites who have supported him are compicit in his atrocities. We've gotta take back Congress in '06 -- and when we do I want to see a lot of people go to jail. (God...sometimes I wish I didn't oppose the death penalty....) No truth and reconiliation for traitors and war criminals, and certainly not for the neglect that may have increased Katrina's death toll by 100's or even 1000's. Fuck 'em all.
