Congress Likely to Probe Guard Response
By SHARON THEIMER, Associated Press Writer 45 minutes ago

<snip>

Republicans and Democrats alike in Congress are just beginning to ask why one of the National Guard's most trusted roles — disaster relief — was so uneven, delayed and chaotic this time around.

Sen. Chuck Hagel (news, bio, voting record), R-Neb., said the situation has shown major breakdowns in the nation's emergency response capabilities. "There must be some accountability in this process after the crisis is addressed," he said.

Democrat Ben Nelson, Nebraska's other senator, said he now questions National Guard leaders' earlier assertions that they had enough resources to respond to natural disasters even with the Iraq war.

"I'm going to ask that question again," Nelson said. "Do we have enough (troops), and if we do, why were they not deployed sooner?"

5. LOL LOL spenbax... You said it before I could...
Sooooooooooo, will the country goes to hell, MORE panels of talking heads will "likely Probe".. I'm with you, we need a parlimentary system of gov and not the one we have.

That's it, I'm shooting off more letters to my reps and maybe YOUR reps to blast them for this. NO PROBING IS NECESSARY...The truth is right in their faces, if they'll come down out of la la land and SEE IT. BUSHCO FAILED. He did NOT allow the larger rescue effort to proceed until he gave the word GO..........four/five days later.

The BLAME squarely belongs at BUSCO's feet. FOR SHAME.

11. Don't they get extra bucks for serving on these
committies? Big bucks? Isn't that the only reason they have these , as it seems no one is held accountable? I am sick to the core, of corruption.

3. Chain of command problem, article and link here
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2002468593_katmilitary03.html
A request from FEMA — say, water delivered for 1,000 people a day, or a dozen emergency generators and fuel at the New Orleans airport — must come through a defense coordinating officer in Baton Rouge, La., or Jackson, Miss.

It then is forwarded to the operations center at Camp Shelby, which ensures the military can meet it. Next, it is forwarded to Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colo., where officials of Northern Command — which oversees all active-duty military operations in the United States — match it with specific units.

The package finally goes to the Pentagon to await the signature of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. Only then can the unit be deployed, whether it's a squadron of helicopters or a dozen dump trucks.

So far, according to officers at Camp Shelby, the military had managed through this system to deploy 68 Army, Navy and Marine Corps helicopters and four ships, including the USS Bataan, an amphibious carrier; the aircraft carrier Truman; the Iwo Jima, a second amphibious ship; and the USS Comfort, a hospital ship.

6. Careful what you say.................but I couldn't agree more. >:o]
I'm really really really really really FED UP with our government.

I say dismantle this government and set up a parlimentary system of gov.

While I'm on the subject..... I ALSO think we should throw out 90% of our own dem leaders and get some FRESH MEAT in there, direct from our own communities to led us.

8. Yup, it will be like mating elephants.
Lots of screaming and bellowing. And the outcome? Nothing to see here, move along. Now, can we get back to repealing the estate tax.
