Rumsfeld cancels Letterman appearance
U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld won't be appearing on "The Late Show with David Letterman" next week after all.

Letterman's people announced earlier this week that Rumsfeld would be a guest on Tuesday night's show.

But Rumsfeld's office said Friday he will be too busy focusing on federal relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

"We obviously understand this decision," executive producer Rob Burnett said." "He is welcome to come here any time."

43. Yup, I think you've nailed it, Mad_Dem_X. Afraid of a live audience.
And what is this crap from Letterman's producer--"He is welcome to come here any time"? WHY is this mass murderer of tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis, who sat out 9/11 in a meeting, welcome?

Welcome to get tarred and feathered and expelled from the country on a cruise missile, I'd have said.

He finally made a smart move by cancelling. I also heard Condi is heading down to Alabama to help. Guess she got the message after the incident of the woman screaming at her buying expensive shoes in NYC. Bet a memo went out to all the Bush people - the boss looks bad, damage control time.

16. How is Rumsfeld...
...a suitable guest on an "entertainment" program?

Is this a General Electric set-up? Was Rummy supposed to yuck-it-up with Dave?
This was a designed fluff-piece, a "let's report the good news from Iraq" 10 minutes; putting a "human" face on the miscreants that engineered this disaster. Imagining Dave asking Rummy any hard questions is absurd.
I'm really pissed at Letterman for allowing this. But he has bosses, and those bosses are part of the BFEE.
I have emailed CBS on their choice of guests, and suggest others do the same.

20. This calls for a Top Ten List...
From the home office in Grand Rapids Michigan,

The Top Ten Reasons why Rumsfeld Canceled his Letterman appearance:

10) He wasn't looking his best because abject failure makes him break out in hives.

9) Remembered that he had been previously scheduled to invade Iran that night.

8) Decided to set a good example and has enlisted in the Army to fight for freedom in Iraq.

7) Looked at projected gasoline prices and found out that even -he- couldn't afford the trip.

6) He's scheduled to get plastic surgery done in order to sneak out of the country and start a new life on a Japanese fishing trawler.

5) Now that the California legislature has approved gay marriage, he and his "room mate" are going to be tying the knot.

4) It turns out that that Tuesdays are the nights he bathes in the blood of virgins.

3) Three words: "Big Brother Six"

2) Too busy jumping into his vault, swimming through his money and going "Wheeeee!"

And, the number one reason Rumsfeld canceled his Letterman appearance:

1) "Frog March"

32. Rumsfeld: isn't it a shame
that he wasn't convicted and hung at Nuremburg? Yeah, I know, it's an anachronism, but I think that goes to show that he was just born at the wrong time. The Reich surely could have used a man with his talents.

37. Rumsfeld is HIDING - plain and simple!
He could have gone on Letterman to motivate people to donate money or something useful like that. But I guess he would have had to defend the Iraq War in light of Katrina -- which would not have been an easy job to do on that show!
