Canadians donate over $1 million for Hurricane Katrina relief
The Canadian Red Cross estimates that so far Canadians have donated over $1 million to date to help survivors of Hurricane Katrina.

As well, the agency said 37 Canadian Red Cross workers left for Houston on Saturday to help victims of Hurricane Katrina in the first of a series of missions being organized for the months ahead. The volunteers -- from Sydney, Nova Scotia to Edmonton, Alberta -- will support the American Red Cross in managing 270 shelters and delivering some 500,000 hot meals each day.

3. The donations will keep coming
I promise you that. There's a very big community of Expats like myself here in Alberta who are also donating as well; it won't stop until there's enough to help every single person ravaged by Katrina.

5. The donations - for other charities as well - are just getting started.
I was "abused" by the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld (actor Larry Thomas) today at Green's Diner in New Westminster (a 'burb of Vancouver). The line-ups were enormous, about a half-hour wait, all going to relief...

I asked for major, serious, hard-core abuse, but the atmosphere was just too, um...charitable. So I bought four bowls of mulligatawny anyway. Just finished 'em for dinner.

On a more serious note, the BC Lumber industry is also in talks with Habitat for Humanity/Jimmy Carter, about giving them huge quantities of lumber, plywood and particle board for the rebuilding of the Gulf Coast. (Gotta' love that irony, considering our little trade war with the US right now. Another thing for * to suck on...)

6. I hadn't heard about B.C. Lumber, that is great news, it will be so
badly needed. Re your overdose on mulligatawny, lol, it is for a good cause!

7. I realize this is the first drop of what will probably be
a very large commitment from Canada, but what I thought of when I read the $ 1 million was Dr. Evil from the Austin Powers movies.

Canadian government spokesman Dr Evil announced yesterday that the country was sending .... pause for dramatic music .... one meeeelllllion dollars.

Gosh. That's three cents per Canadian citizen.

8. That donation was not from the government, it is from individuals

and it is only what had been donated to the Red Cross, not to any of the other organizations.

I suggest you read the article, it says it very plainly there, CITIZENS

Another thing, we have people on the ground right now in Louisiana, search and rescue, RCMP, etc.

Edited to add: Canada is sending 91 million barrels of oil to the US, Canadians have been asked to conserve so we can fulfil our commitment.

I hope this alleviates your concern about us not contributing enough?

12. Canada sending medical supplies, beds to U.S.
Canada is sending thousands of beds, blankets, surgical gloves and dressings and other medical supplies to the hurricane-ravaged U.S. Gulf Coast.

"This is the beginning of an integrated effort," Dr. Howard Njoo of the Public Health Agency of Canada said at a press conference Sunday. "This is just a starting point of what we can give to our American friends."

The agency is sending the relief in response to an official request from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The supplies come from the stockpiles kept on hand by Canadian authorities to respond to disaster situations.
