At least 19 Iraqi policemen and soldiers killed by rebels

In one attack on the outskirts of Baquba, rebels armed with automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenades attacked a joint army and police checkpoint on the main Baghdad highway, killing seven policemen and two soldiers, an army officer said.

Two more policemen were wounded and at least 10 rebels killed in the incident which occurred about 40 kilometres (25 miles) northwest of the capital, the officer said.

Earlier in the day, six policemen manning a checkpoint on a pedestrian bridge in Baquba itself were shot dead and three wounded when gunmen launched an attack.

And four soldiers on patrol were killed in Odhaim, 120 kilometres (80 miles) northwest of the capital, the army said.
