Red-State Democrats Tilt to Yes on Roberts
Red-State Democrats Tilt to Yes on Roberts

By Jim VandeHei
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, September 4, 2005; Page A07

Sen. Kent Conrad, a Democrat from North Dakota, sounds like a swooning Republican when he talks about Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts Jr.

"I am impressed with his demeanor, his intelligence, his sense of humor, his modesty," said Conrad. "Absent some bombshell, which I don't expect, I think he will be confirmed and quite handily."

Praise like this is bad news for the nearly 30 liberal special interest groups calling on Democrats to block Roberts's rise to the Supreme Court. But it is good politics for Democrats such as Conrad who are running for reelection in states that President Bush won, according to several senators and strategists.

With the confirmation hearings expected to focus extensively on Roberts's views on abortion, affirmative action and other social issues, a number of Democrats say it would be unwise politically for Conrad and the five other red-state senators to side with liberal groups such as People for the American Way and NARAL Pro-Choice America.

1. He'll probably swoon over Falwell's attorney
to replace the Chief Justice. Red state democrats equate Bush lites.

They won't get a cent from me.

4. Sorry but our country is going to learn a sorry long lesson
there will be a lot more pain before this is over, and in 7 to 10 years after we have thrown away our young American lives in Iraq, and the country is fully bankqrupt, people will then wish for saftey net of social security, medicare, and civil rights, which they have lost

The only hope now is for Democrats to attack bush for what he has done to our country. NO MORE COMPROMISE!!!

Either get on the train or get out of the way

bush has been weakened by his handling of the emergency in New Orleans, and if Democrats DO NOT SEIZE THIS OPPORTUNITY NOW, IT IS TIME TO LOOK FOR ANOTHER PARTY!!!

The death of Judge Rhenquist may have tipped the scales on all that!

Besides, shouldn't we be making it a priority of sorting out the Hurricane Katrina first.

released documents.

I am really giving up on Democrats. except for the real fighters.

I am so disgusted with this party.

In light of Katrina and Rehnquist, isn't it time to take a stand?? Stand in unity?? For once?? oppose?? Don't they give a f*ck about this country??

10. Hmmm. The upcoming re-election has him thinking this way?
Then he should be defeated in the primary. This is no democrat. This is a corporate candidate and I bet it can be proved by his campaign contributors.

14. Roberts could be the guy Bush pushes for Chief Justice.

I know it sounds crazy, but Roberts is young and would be around a lot longer than Scalia and he is exactly what Bush and his party want. Pick Roberts for Chief Justice and then fight over the next ultra-right wing pick for the other vacancy. Not much the Democrats can do about any of it now anyway. All you can hope is that the country stays in one piece long enough to fight these SCJ battles again years into the future with different people in power.

15. Then why don't you marry him, Conrad?
"I am impressed with his demeanor, his intelligence, his sense of humor, his modesty.."

If the American people want their Supreme Court justices picked on the basis of personality, they could just use eHarmony.com.

18. They will never learn to look farther than appearance and manners and
personal traits.

Did you notice he was a really, really bad man who helped to cover up Iran-Contra, who helped with the stolen election in 2000, and who hates and wants to keep down anyone who is not white, male, heterosexual and a GOP Fundie Christian.

19. I wonder how many of Hitler's Judges the German Social Democrats
confirmed. Or how many of them gushed over Der Fihrer's appointments?

More than a few, no doubt.

And our Democrats seem hell bent on replicating every mistake the German Social Democrats made.

They, at almost every step, have walked blindly into every trap, have cut their own throats, and have helped by inaction, to push Old Free America into the dustibin of history neqarly as much as the Busheviks have pushed it there by their actions.

A sad, but very old story.

20. Note to "red" state "Democrats"
You'll never turn those "red" states into BLUE states if you keep on rolling over like trained poodles.

2/3 to 3/5 of America thinks that Shrub is doing a suck-ass job as president - and that was before the press caught him eating cake and playing at playing the guitar while people drowned in NOLA. Even Republicans are running away from him like cockroaches run from light.

NOW is the time to rip into that SOB and all his evil minions. Thats what we "red" state voters elected you to do!

In Oklahoma, at the national level, that would be Dan Boren. At the state level there are too many to name that fit that description.
