John Grisham to donate $5M to Katrina relief
John Grisham to donate $5M to Katrina relief

The Associated Press

Bestselling writer John Grisham and his wife will contribute $5 million to a relief fund they established this week at a Tupelo bank to help Mississippians rebuild after Hurricane Katrina.

"We don't normally publicize gifts. It's something we keep extremely private," Grisham said Friday during a conference call with the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal and officials with BancorpSouth.

"But in these very, very rare circumstances — this tragic time — we hope the gift will get some attention and inspire other people to contribute money and help our fellow Mississippians on the Gulf Coast," said Grisham, who maintains a home in Oxford, Miss.

Grisham, a former state legislator, said the fund will assist Mississippi residents and businesses.

"I wonder how many of these homes are uninsured, how many are insured, and how big a gap there is between insurance and loss, he said. "Let's help plug those gaps."

4. Impressive
This man and his wife donate 5 million and the Wal-fart empire could only manage a measly 1 million. Just one more reason to despise the Walton clan.

14. the figure is $15 mil
but what is that, for a global company. They can afford ALOT more. But I guess the regional managers won't see their quarterly bone-us.

7. He was college roommates with our last Democratic governor.....
Ronnie Musgrove, and they are still close friends. A 2007 Grisham campaign against Haley Barbour would be a dream come true to me!

11. I believe that is 5 times as much as the NFL has given so far.
The National Football League has made hundreds of millions off the citizens of New Orleans and needs to give some real money back to a city in dire need. The local team was pushing NO and LA. to build them a 500 million plus stadium that wasn't needed but I guess they can kiss that bit of corporate welfare goodbye which probably means they will stab NO in the back first chance they get and move the team to another wealthier city (Los Angeles).

I cannot believe the stinginess of some of the wealthiest African Americans. Mr. multi-millionaire Kobe Bryant is donating only $100,000. P'Diddy or is it now just plain Diddy.... donating only $1,000,000? He is reported to be worth several hundred million. And then there is the fund being established by a member of one of the football leagues. He's asking that members contribute 5,000. Some of those players earn in the millions. I was just shocked when I heard how little that wealthy blacks are contributing. I know it's their money but such stinginess when you have so much is just plain disgraceful.

13. why doesn't the "misadminsitration"
give too. They can afford it, with all of thier tax cuts. Personally, I have donated $500. I am one of the people who would be devastated by missing a paycheck.
