Former Vice President Al Gore will give a speech in Portland on Tuesday on global warming.

Scott Ballo, a Democratic political consultant helping with the event, said the 6:30 p.m. speech at the Oregon Convention Center will be free and open to the public.

(snip)

Gore has given several speeches charging that the Bush administration should act more forcefully to reduce greenhouse gas emissions blamed for global warming.

(More, but not much... )

2. One small thing...
...keep pointing to the scientific evidence linking global warming to increased weather extremities (e.g. killer hurricanes, droughts, cold spells.)

Also - that 20% of the Arctic ice cap melted since 1970 has got to be sloshing around somewhere!

4. He talks about a lot of specific, current events
I expect he will talk about Katrina in this one, but here is the text of one speech he gave in January of last year. It looses a lot when you can't see the photos:

3. A lot of the progress is being made by state and local governments
For example, in June, San Francisco hosted the UN's World Environment Day 2005 (another event Gore was involved in), where mayors from around the world signed an international treaty calling for increased use of public transportation and drastic cuts to the amount of trash sent to landfills.

Here's a text of the accords:

8. Quote from Gore, 1992
"Warming oceans are also likely to cause the average hurricane to be more powerful, scientists say, because the depth and warmth of the ocean's top layer is the single most important factor in deter- mining the speed of a hurricane's winds. More powerful and more frequent storms coming into the land from the ocean would in turn greatly exacerbate the damage from rising sea levels, for it is during storm surges that the sea advances farthest inland from the coast." p. 106, 1992 hardback edition of "Earth in the Balance" by Al Gore.

24. I was looking at that quote from his book too ...
There's another bit further on, about low-lying coastal cities being particularly vulnerable to climate change.

Amazing that he wrote it more than a decade ago, at a time when most people weren't really aware of the issues, and the science has held up pretty well. I teach a global environmental change course, and I still go back and check over what Gore said on various topics, when I'm getting lectures together. He's been right a lot more than he's been wrong, so far.

I hope his Portland event is packed! I would love to go, but I have to teach, and I can't make it down there from British Columbia and back again. (I don't think Al would want me to cut class -- unless I brought the students with me, of course! That would sure be memorable.)

9. Gore flew into New Orleans to get people out on his plane
Bush didn't take any of the Katrina victims back on Air Force One.

The contrast between the two men is like comparing Luke Skywalker to the evil emperor.

11. Why didn't Gore convince S.Jobs to deal with the ipod problem much sooner?
http://www.computertakeback.com/bad_apple/iwaste_more_info.cfm

Of course, chucking defective batteries in some third world country's backyard is more likely to cause environmental poisoning and affect the health of the people living there. but I don't think that would contribute to global warming...

No more speeches, politicians. DO SOMETHING. All politicians do is blab blab blab. Bafflegab and nothing more.

When not giving speeches they're just "doing business" anyway; and that's a totally separate world. :eyes:

F.Y.I. iPod batteries are rechargeable lithium batteries, which are the same kind of batteries used in laptops and cordless phones. iPods don't use AAA, AA, C or D batteries - - most consumers still use "disposable" batteries in those sizes, rather than rechargable batteries.

Finally, iPod batteries can be replaced.

Haven't you noticed it? And he is not the chairman or CEO of Apple. He is a member of the board and he is not alone there.

Gore will speak in Portland
The Oregonian
Sunday, September 04, 2005

Former Vice President Al Gore will give a speech in Portland on Tuesday on global warming.

Scott Ballo, a Democratic political consultant helping with the event, said the 6:30 p.m. speech at the Oregon Convention Center will be free and open to the public.

Ballo said Gore called Portland businessman Terry Bean, a major donor to Democratic causes, and enlisted his aid in setting up a venue for the speech.

We have neglected Mother Earth - we are paying the price.

I am so glad President Gore will speak out on this crucial problem, a voice of sanity in this Orwellian world.

We'd live in a very different world had he actually taken the office he rightfully won in 2000. Sigh. I pray he runs again in 2008. I'd quit my job to work for his campaign full time if he did.

I have heard him speak on global warming before and he blew me away with the depth of his knowledge, not an empty hat like the idiot who is a posterboy for clueless.
