Bush: prompt action needed on court vacancies (Reuters)
President George W. Bush pledged on Sunday to move quickly to nominate a successor to U.S. Chief Justice William Rehnquist, whose death opens a second spot on the high court for the president to fill.

"There are now two vacancies on the Supreme Court and it will serve the best interest of the nation to fill those vacancies promptly," Bush said at the White House.

"I will choose in a timely manner a highly qualified nominee to succeed Chief Justice Rehnquist," he said.

Rehnquist's death creates a rare double opening and gives Bush the chance to make a significant mark on shaping the court. The Republican president's choices for the posts will be subject to intense political scrutiny from all sides, given the enormous power the court wields at the top of the judicial branch of the U.S. government.

2. Bush should be immediately prevented from taking any more...
...presidentail actions on anything, by being forced to resign, held for impeachment or immediately fired as president. This goes for VP Cheney as well.

3. Oh yeah--they can be prompt about THAT but not saving lives.
They are so damn worried about getting conservative wingnuts on the SCOTUS because they want to overturn rulings Roe v Wade and Miranda. They see those as morally important, somehow.

Seems strange to me that they can pledge promptness on THAT kind of crap but not manage to do much to save all those poor people down in the gulf coast.

Hypocrites.

10. Now that Rehnquist has passed on-
a very sad moment, however that will open the ranks for another so called Bible Thumper to be introduced to the mix. Let us hope that cool heads will prevail in this matter.

11. Prayer Vigils to Continue in Light of Rehnquist Death (NCC)
Meanwhile, on a similar note...

WASHINGTON, Sept. 4 /Christian Wire Service/ -- The National Clergy Council and the Christian Defense Coalition will continue in their plans to hold daily prayer services this week for the future of the United States Supreme Court. The two groups had earlier announced their four-times daily vigils would focus on the confirmation process for Judge John Roberts. The Rehnquist family and the President's choice of a second nominee and of the next chief justice will now be added to the daily agenda.

"The death of the Chief Justice makes the selection of new members to the Court that much more critical," said the Reverend Rob Schenck, president of the National Clergy Council and a board member of the Evangelical Church Alliance.

"While we mourn Justice Rehnquist's passing and pray for his family, we urge the President to choose a successor in Justice Rehnquist's tradition of upholding traditional moral values. The choice of the next justice and chief justice will be the absolutely decisive factor in turning the direction of a previously divided court. The need for prayer is even greater now."

Prayer services will begin today, September 4, at 3:00 and 7:00 P.M. in front of the Supreme Court and continue after that at 9:00 a.m., 12, 3 and 7 p.m. Analysis by conservative Christian leaders of both the confirmation process (if it continues on schedule) and / or the selection of nominees for the vacancy and the chief justiceship will be held each day at 10:00 a.m. in front of the Russell and Hart Senate office buildings.
