An Australian diplomat has been granted permission to enter devastated New Orleans for a few hours to search for two Australians still missing after Hurricane Katrina.
Officials have serious concerns for the two Australians - a 30-year-old male traveller from Victoria and a 75-year-old Australian man who is a permanent US resident.
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said the Australian consular official from Atlanta, plus another from Britain, were the first allowed in after the US State Department relaxed a ban on foreign officials going to the city, stricken in the days after the hurricane by anarchic violence and looting.
Australians caught up in the aftermath of the hurricane, and their relatives back home, have attacked the government and the Department of Foreign Affairs for not giving them enough help.
Opposition Leader Kim Beazley said Australian diplomats should have ignored American orders and gone straight into New Orleans to rescue trapped Australians.
