Mayor: Katrina Death Toll May Hit 10,000
Edited on Mon Sep-05-05 12:42 PM by theearthisround
One week after Hurricane Katrina devastated the region, miles-long lines of vehicles crawled into Jefferson Parish on Monday as residents were allowed to return to salvage what was left of their homes. New Orleans' mayor warned that 10,000 people may have died.

President Bush began his second trip to the region since the storm hit, landing in Baton Rouge late in the morning to start another inspection tour and consultations with federal and local officials.

"All levels of the government are doing the best they can," Bush said in Baton Rouge. "So long as any life is in danger, we've got work to do," he said.

Traffic began moving into the parish west of New Orleans at about 6 a.m. A curfew was set for 6 p.m., and residents were told they could stay until Wednesday.

they'll be lucky if it's only 10,000 people throughout the Gulf Coast region.

6. I'm going to go out on a limb and estimate
100,000 deaths. It's a very real possibility.

And just imagine what that will do to the Bush administration.

7. Regionally, I think that's a very conservative estimate.

3. that number doesn't include the ones who'll die in shelters.....
Edited on Mon Sep-05-05 12:54 PM by jus_the_facts
...that are inadequate to handle the exorbitant population growth thrust upon the surrounding towns..cities..and states....the ramifications aren't even beginning to be felt...except like here where we're having civic scrolling messages begging for FOOD BANK DONATIONS as this northeast Louisiana city is having to do to keep people fed...our Civic Center is overflowing with only 3 shower stalls for thousands to bathe in...it's not going away..it's here to stay...the New World Order Depression is ON my brotha's and sista's.

4. Every death that occurred after the storm, is on bush's head.

And on this administration's head.

Criminal negligence.

18. "Cause of death" statistics will be VERY interesting.
Exposure, dehydration, diabetes, and a host of other maladies will be a strong indication of the delay impact. I'd be willing to bet someone will try to keep such statistics suppressed.

22. No meaningful ones will be published - just official lies

With the rush towards "get rid of them for public health reasons",
the majority of bodies will simply be "processed" as fast as possible.
This means that "unfortunately" determining the exact cause of death
will not be possible so they'll be chalked up to the direct effect of
the storm, not the subsequent murderous incompetence.

28. And on Ray Nagin's head...
for not following the parameters in his own evacuation plan, thus stranding thousands in the city to ride out the aftereffects.

And on Kathleen Blanco's head for not mobilizing effectively before and after the storm.

And on and on and on...

Plenty of blame to go around.

9. Katrina death toll may be 10,000 as Bush vows help
By Mark Egan and Paul Simao
NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Victims of Hurricane Katrina returned to pick through their battered homes on Monday and President George W. Bush promised to fix bungled rescue efforts after a disaster in which the mayor of New Orleans said as many as 10,000 may have died.

12. Remember and spread this meme:
You get the government you pay for!

Want huge tax cuts for the rich and the big corporations?
Want to repeal the estate tax?
Want to spend billions on a useless war?

Then expect to have a much less effective government. N0 in '05 is the only evidence you need to prove your point.

17. I really think the administration,
wrote off the "undesirables" who vote democrat and didn't get out after the evacuation. When Geraldo, Anderson and the rest started frantically reporting what was going on it was "oh shit we got to do something". They feared looking so racist that they would lose their southpark conservatives and sex in the city republicans. Doing a grover norquist rape of the commonwealth and wage slavery doesn't upset their soft base, but KKK racist troll stuff for some reason could get a lot of republicans to leave the party. I shudder to think of the toll if no media people were there to shock the high political operatives into action

21. This number is way too low.
I'm a first-responder for a comparable urban population area (San Francisco) and what they're really looking at within 6 months is something closer to 70,000.

But it is certainly in the interests of the administration to keep this figure as low as lying with statistics will allow.

Expect experts, both foreign and domestic, to give us closer death tolls within the next thirty days.

And now we're still in search and rescue mode...urban rescue is very different than other types of rescue. Pockets of people can survive a very long time with a bit of water/liquid and food in houses or attics for up to several weeks.

We can't let down rescue-mode for a second yet.

23. 10,000 From the Gentleman over there; do I Hear 20?
Furthermore, any odds on whether we'll ever have a reasonably accurate count? And will the other nations cashier our ambassoadors in protest over the shoddy treatment doled out to their nationals?

The fallout is going to be world-changing (at least, I hope so, for all our sakes).
