Cuba, previously a 'threat,' drops from radar
Cuba, previously a 'threat,' drops from radar

Two years ago, John Bolton widely publicized a State Department report alleging that Cuba was developing a biological warfare program.
By DAVID ADAMS, Times Latin America Correspondent
Published September 6, 2005

MIAMI - A week ago, the State Department quietly reinterpreted its intelligence assessment on the bioweapons threat posed by Cuba.

It makes for interesting reading.

Readers may recall that two years ago the State Department alleged that Cuba had "at least a limited, developmental offensive biological warfare research and development effort."

The report was widely publicized by critics of the Cuban government, including John Bolton, who at the time was undersecretary for arms control and international security.

1. Well can't be mentioning Cuba
When Bush refused the over 1500 doctors that Cuba offered to send to NOLA. The Bush adminstration would like to keep Cuba out of the news.

4. Bolton is off his rocker....who is this loon?
I think the man is seriously mentally ill. He needs to be put on meds and relieved of duty ASAP. Crying wolf about WMDs is SO PRE-KATRINA. Someday we are going to actually get a big bio-attack and people are going to ignore it.

5. Why Cuba is a threat to Bushco..
Edited on Tue Sep-06-05 09:32 AM by Mika
From the lead article..
They base their concern on Cuba's "technical capability" to pursue bioweapons thanks to the island's highly advanced biotech and pharmaceutical industry.

Cuba sets a bad example - A small poor country that has developed infrastructure to supply advanced meds to Cubans (via their world-class socialized health care system), as well as supplying needed low cost meds to many countries in the Latin Americas and in Africa.

This kind of activity is a threat to US hegemonic/imperialist interests. I'm sure that one of the reasons that BushCrimeInc will never respond to Cuba's offers of assistance in the wake of Katrina is because it (compassionate, well trained effective Drs, and meds) would sow seeds of doubt in American's minds as to what really is going on in Cuba now and more seeds of doubt regarding US egregious policies towards Cuba. Even though a majority of Americans don't support the sanctions politics against Cuba, interaction with Cubans might lead to the discovery for many that Cubans are not the enemy of the US & might create an actual ground swell for political change of American policy.

9. You've posted some great info.
From the second link, concerning Americans polled on their view of the embargo on Cuba in 2003:
Support for ending the Cuban embargo does tend to turn more sharply on party affiliation, with 59% of Democrats and 66% of Independents saying the embargo should end, and 45% of Republicans agreeing.

Older respondents - presumably more familiar with the Cold War experience - are slightly more likely than younger respondents to favor ending the embargo (65 and older: 57%, compared to those 18-29: 51%).

Others who favor ending the embargo include: college graduates (62%), African Americans (61%), higher income respondents ($75,000-plus: 61%). Hispanics (45%) Born-again Christians (43%) and conservatives (47%) are significantly less likely to favor ending the embargo.
(snip)
Very interesting stats.

8. Of those differences between intelligence and interpretation....
Because the best intelligence in the wrong hands can become the worst.
