Stretch of Florida's Atlantic coast under tropical storm warning
Associated Press

MIAMI - About 120 miles of Florida's Atlantic coast were under a tropical storm warning Tuesday as a new system formed just offshore and threatened to dump up to 15 inches of rain in parts of the state.

The tropical depression could strengthen into Tropical Storm Ophelia by Wednesday, which prompted the warning from north of Jupiter to Titusville, according to the National Hurricane Center. It could bring tropical storm conditions of winds of at least 39 mph to the state by Wednesday morning.

"The primary concern is very heavy rains," hurricane specialist Richard Pasch said. Five to 10 inches were expected over the next few days, with some isolated areas possibly getting 15 inches.

At 11 a.m. EDT, the depression had top sustained winds of about 30 mph and was centered about 180 miles southeast of Cape Canaveral. It wasn't moving, but it should start heading north-northwest later Tuesday.

4. Tropical Storm Lee

Tropical Storm Lee Forms, Falters

The Associated Press

MIAMI -- Tropical Storm Lee formed Wednesday in the central Atlantic, then weakened into a tropical depression, but it posed no threat to land, forecasters said.

Lee became a tropical storm Wednesday afternoon when its winds reached 40 mph -- just above the 39 mph threshold for a tropical storm.

In its 11 p.m. advisory, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Lee had weakened into a tropical depression with winds of 35 mph.

Lee was about 925 miles east of Bermuda and moving north-northeast near 10 mph, forecasters said. On this track, the five-day forecast projected the storm would stay far from land.

5. They Don't Reset The Alphabet
Edited on Tue Sep-06-05 11:12 AM by iamjoy
I think the plan is to use the Greek alphabet (Alpha, Beta, Gamma) is they ever run through all the names (21, we don't use Q, U, X,Y & Z)

added on edit:

1995 was the second most active season with 19 named storms (through T), we didn't hit the O name until the first week in October.

1933 was the most active, with 21 storms, but they weren't naming them then.

12. There are also presently two tropical waves
that might form into storms. One is in the Gulf Of Mexico, and one is about equidistant between Africa and South America.
