Newsview: White House Falls Out of Step

"It's going to be almost impossible to overcome the perception about the president that he didn't show compassion and didn't get control of the policy failures," American University political scientist James Thurber said. "The vivid images that are coming across the television are really destroying his image as a leader."
<...>
Bush had raised eyebrows on his first trip by, among other things, picking Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss. - instead of the thousands of mostly poor and black storm victims - as an example of loss. "Out of the rubbles of Trent Lott's house - he's lost his entire house - there's going to be a fantastic house. And I'm looking forward to sitting on the porch," Bush said with a laugh from an airplane hangar in Mobile, Ala.

In the same remarks, Bush gave FEMA chief Brown - the face for many of the inadequate federal response - a hearty endorsement. "Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job," Bush said.

Later in Biloxi, Miss., Bush tried to comfort two stunned women wandering their neighborhood clutching Hefty bags, looking in vain for something to salvage from the rubble of their home. He kept insisting they could find help at a Salvation Army center down the street, even after another bystander had informed him it had been destroyed.

And at his last stop that day, at the airport outside of New Orleans, Bush lauded the increasingly desperate city as a great town because he used go there and "enjoy myself - occasionally too much."

3. Confirmation, anyone, that that was Trent Lott's SECOND home?
How many houses/residences does Lott have, anyway? Likely a place in Washington; the house that was destroyed by Katrina; what else?

21. That was his childhood home--had been in his family for awhile
All senators have a place in DC--some just have an apartment, others have houses. Usually the freshman reps in the House rent a place and share, then they save money and eventually buy a house or condo. They really do need a place in DC, and they are supposed to have a home in their home state as well (and not rent it out, like Rick Santorum did, while getting funding from his home community to homeschool his kids at great expense to the taxpayers of PA).

5. "destroying his image as a leader"? What "image" is that?!
I and millions of others KNEW he had an image as a HEARTLESS, INCOMPETANT, ARROGANT, AWOL, COWARD & CRIMINAL.5

YOU media whores TRIED CONTINUOUSLY for over 5 1/2 years to give us the LIES that he was anything but the UNCAREING ASSHOLE that he is.

WE have provided many examples of his CRIMINALITY, but YOU refused to acknowledge it, much less publicize the fact!

HOW MANY FUCKING EXAMPLES IS IT GOING TO TAKE until you OPEN YOUR EYES?!!!

He was NEVER "trustworthy" or anything in that vein.

HE IS A LIAR.
HE IS A CRIMINAL.
HE IS GREEDY.
HE IS INCOMPETANT.
HE IS SCUM.

Now get that thru your thick skulls!

There's absolutely no warmth from him. The blacks he do surround himself with are just props he uses in his photo ops.

8. Know how viciously they will try to claw back from this fuckup? get ready
and get ready to write letters and make calls more than ever in countering these talking points being now debuted to slime, slander and shift blame away from President "don't buy gas if you don't have to". Be vigilant and ready to write or call any media source that goes along with this just-beginning despicable campaign to shift the blame for this domestic atrocity of the century.

just as bullshit. However, without an "enemy" to go jingoistic about, the press is focusing on how stupid he is.

20. I know WTF
Blame Game? How dare the media or anybody in this Administration reduce the deaths of thousands of people to a “Blame Game”? It isn’t like this is the first abject failure of this Administration. It isn’t like he didn’t have to be shamed into responding to the most recent catastrophic disaster before Katrina, the tsunami. Have we forgotten so quickly? “The Bush administration more than doubled its financial commitment yesterday to provide relief to nations suffering from the Indian Ocean tsunami, amid complaints that the vacationing President Bush has been insensitive to a humanitarian catastrophe of epic proportions.” It isn’t like we all didn’t wonder where he went on 9/11, or why he spent 7 minutes reading “My Pet Goat”. It isn’t like we haven’t been living with the abysmal failure in Iraq for over 2 years. It isn’t like Osama Bin Laden is in jail or anything.

Blame Game? You’ve got to be kidding. I’d call it a reckoning and one that is long over due.

Need further convincing? Here is the ABC Guide to the Bush Scandals, which I still haven’t had time to complete. Blame Game my hind-end. When is this Administration going to answer for the disasters they have wrought on this planet.

I want Barbara and Poppy bush to be forced to live with the poor blacks for the rest of their miserable lives.

31. The first sentence bothered me:
Edited on Wed Sep-07-05 11:39 AM by skypilot
The Bush White House is known for its ability to remain in control of its message and image, sliding out of crises with barely a scratch.

They can't remain in control of their message without the enabling hand of the media. Despite the content of the rest of the article this opening statement really bothered me. It's not because of anything particularly masterful being done by the Bush team that they are able to "stay on message" and "slide of of crises". The media plays a big role in it, something that this sentence doesn't cop to.
