Democrats Assail Katrina Response

President Bush makes comments at a make shift shelter for victims of Hurricane Katrina in Baton Rouge.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The top Senate Democrat on Wednesday called for an investigation into the way the government dealt with Hurricane Katrina, including whether President Bush's Texas vacation interfered with the response. Republican chairmen pledged to focus on recovery now and investigate later.

In a letter to the Homeland Security Committee chairwoman, Minority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada pressed for a wide-ranging investigation and answers to several questions, including: "How much time did the president spend dealing with this emerging crisis while he was on vacation? Did the fact that he was outside of Washington, D.C., have any effect on the federal government's response?"

The letter was obtained by the Associated Press.

4. I say, send him all the news accounts
about the "rescue" before they disappear. If someone could make friends with someone in his office, then all the stuff could be sent to him. But, it may need to be more than links, screen captures may be necessary as links can become useless when the site moves the info.

6. Check out this exchange between Pelosi and Bush
Sounds like something Jon Stewart should parody.

At a news conference, Pelosi, D-Calif., said Bush's choice for head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency had "absolutely no credentials."

She related that she had urged Bush at the White House on Tuesday to fire Michael Brown.

"He said 'Why would I do that?'" Pelosi said.

"'I said because of all that went wrong, of all that didn't go right last week.' And he said 'What didn't go right?'"

"Oblivious, in denial, dangerous," she added.

7. That is a very poorly written story
The reason it's poorly written is that the two journalists writing it completely missed what truly was the heart of the story, that being:

"What didn't go right?"

That is an INCREDIBLE, NEWS MAKING comment!

13. National Economic Council 2001-2002 Director Report
Good science policy never involves ignoring reports over political favoritism:

"We all know that scientific research lies behind our nation's long-term economic success. As I will make clear this morning, good science is also the key to both defining and addressing many of the great policy challenges facing our country. That is why I am here today to talk to you candidly about energy and global climate change. Ultimately it will be your work - in laying the foundation for new technologies and increasing our understanding of the world around us - that will enable our nation to address these important policy challenges." -- Lawrence B. Lindsey (May 11, 2001)

"Similarly, we confront a potentially major challenge in human effects
on the global climate." -- Lawrence B. Lindsey

Lawrence B. Lindsey is the assistant to President George W. Bush for economic policy, and director of the National Economic Council.
