US Republicans say hurricane won't stop budget cuts

WASHINGTON, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Republicans in Congress on Wednesday rejected calls by Democrats to suspend work on tax cuts, that would mainly benefit the rich, and spending reductions on social programs because of the huge costs of hurricane relief.

"Now is not the time to cut services for our most vulnerable, cut taxes for our most fortunate and add $35 billion to the deficit," the Democratic leaders of the Senate and the House of Representatives said in a letter to their Republican counterparts.

...

The committees are also scheduled to approve $70 billion in tax cuts this month. The cuts could be extensions of reductions on capital gains and dividends, which affect mainly the incomes of the wealthy.

The Democrats said that budget plan "would likely cut programs that many victims of Hurricane Katrina will be relying on" and asked that it be suspended "indefinitely."

of the Repukes going ahead with this agenda. If one turns out to be my con-man, John Boozman, he will be getting several scathing emails and phone calls.

45. I Agree This Is Class Warfare
...and we did not shoot first. Molly Ivans is right, they started this class warfare, not us. Then, schtepping with Rove, they blame us for their crap. We did not start this calss war, but something tells me we WILL finish it. And if they think a 2000.00 debit card to a few hurricane survivors is enough, they are wrong. There are other people surviving the devastation of man-made hurricanes, Hurricane Class and Hurricane Entitlement.

What a bunch of f-ing scrooges. :puke:

It is time for another Boston Tea Party, People.

so it will be hog-tied when Dems get back into power. All Dems will be able to do is try and manage the debt crisis.

Cutting the Medicare budget 1% over 5 years will result in it covering more people? (paraphrased from reported words of Senator Gregg)

A logic disconnect in the Senator's thinking? Or just BS?

35. I got the same one, and also signed
At this point, why would any Dems even consider going along with these cruel and inhumane policies? They are shut out of everything by Republicans, which makes me furious, because they are in effect taking away my ability to have a voice in government, and steamrolling over every good thing we ever had in this country.

We have to fight. At this point, it's not just about winning, it's about honor, and dignity. I refuse to cringe and cower like a whipped dog. If I'm going to get destroyed, I want to leave deep wounds in my murderer, so that he'll know he was in a fight.

38. They are degenerate scum utterly without one scrap of redeeming value.
They are nothing but puerile, gutter crawling servants of mammon. Anyone who votes to support this war on the poor should be unceremoniously and summarily tossed from office and get the opportunity to experience poverty unemployment and despair first hand. When hundreds of thousands of our fellow Americans are suffering all they can think about is taking food, clothing, medical care and education from the poorest of the poor to line the pockets of the obscenely rich and their corporate masters. This is utterly and completely beyond outrageous and disgusting but it is par for their wretched vile course. To them it is clear we are expendable and nothing, not even the worst natural disaster we have ever faced, will stop them from wiping out every last vestige of a social safety net and endangering our very lives. The time for an electoral revolution is at hand.

I would hope even most of the Tax cut beneficiaries would prefer that the money be spent to help the people affected. A thread in DU-P, contains Kerry's petition demanding tax cuts be taken off the table.
