Tancredo: Block Aid to Louisiana Politicians
WASHINGTON, DC. - Congressman Tom Tancredo (R-CO) wrote a letter to Speaker Hastert, urging him to direct federal hurricane relief aid through channels other than Louisiana public officials. Citing incompetence and a history of corruption, Tancredo said a bipartisan select committee of the House should administer the aid and provide accountability for the $52 billion requested. The letter is reprinted below:

Dear Mr. Speaker,

Given the abysmal failure of state and local officials in Louisiana to plan adequately for or respond to the effects of Hurricane Katrina on the city of New Orleans, and given the long history of public corruption in Louisiana, I hope the House will refrain from directly appropriating any funds from the public treasury to either the state of Louisiana or the city of New Orleans. Instead, reconstruction and relief funds dedicated to the people of New Orleans should be administered by a private organization or a select committee similar to the historic Truman Commission.

2. Every penny that doesn't go through FEMA - may find its way to
some small business, and not a big one.

Why would FEMA want competition in contracts?

The neocons are not about free market. They only harp on that when it works in their favor.

4. A sick, twisted fool
No mention of Brown.
No mention of Chertoff.

The next time this guy comes to NH to rally his little band of bigots, we need to make sure he is forced to account for his twisted statements.

A private organization?! Like what? Halliburton? Or (since Tan-crud-o is in CO) Focus on the Family, perhaps?

16. Two things to note
There are a couple of things to notice in Tancredo's letter.

First, he rattles off a list of indicted and convicted officials. What he fails to mention is that most of the individuals referenced are not from Orleans Parish.

Second, and more damning, is the fact that Tancredo singles out the State of Louisiana and the City of New Orleans. Tancredo does not have a problem with aid being sent directly to Jefferson Parish (Metairie, Kenner) or to St. Tammany Parish (Slidell, Covington), the two large, overwhelmingly white, overwhelmingly Republican suburban parishes. This despite the fact that both parishes have long standing problems with corruption that are at least as severe as those in Orleans proper.

Strip the veneer off of Rep. Tancredo's words and we are left with a racist screed worthy of a certain former resident of Louisiana named Duke.

and its members should be hauled off to Guantanamo as enemies of the American people, their property expropriated and distributed to the poor. A socialist government would do just that!

20. The same a....holes that failed to ask questions on the $9.8 billion?
$9.8 billion handed out by Heritage jrs in Iraq...just went down the rat hole....nobody cares, nobody accountable. Why even elect these imcompetant clowns to Congress and the Senate. Congress does zilch to represent We The People nor act as oversight for the losses of Halliburton, etc. Cut out the middle man and just have the Republican or should I say whoever the BFEE sets up as POTUS do whatever they want to WE THE PEOPLE.

These jokers don't even read what is placed in front of them. If Rove says sign, they do not hesitate to sign.

It was founded by the Governor of Louisiana to protect the state's independence from the federal government.

24. Tancredo wants more control over who gets the money
You know the Republicans are drooling at the prospect that they might get to use the relief money as a political leverage. Paying off supporters, Letting Churches get their hands on it to evangelize while they distribute aid or whatever and to make them a more powerful force politically or just paying off whistleblowers. They just want more control to use the money to benefit them like they always do. The only compassion a compassionate conservative has is towards themselves.
