Durbin calls for FEMA director's resignation

WASHINGTON U-S Senator Dick Durbin today called for the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency to resign.

The Illinois Democrat says Michael Brown lacked experience and exercised poor judgment in the agency's initial response to the hurricane that ravaged the Gulf Coast.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan defended Bush from Democratic attacks today, but dodged reporters' questions on whether the president had confidence in Brown.

Meanwhile, Senator Barack Obama (ber-AHK' oh-BAH'-muh) today introduced legislation that would create a national emergency family locator system.

5. He'll issue an apology by the end of the week
"If my comments on the excellent work of Michael Brown were taken by some to reflect poorly on the Dear Leader, I say to those people that I am truly sorry..."

Milquetoastity travels.

6. Thank you Senator Durbin for doing the right thing
and calling for dismissal of Mr. Brown from FEMA. He is still not performing properly in this disaster. Aid has been turned away from the beginning. Aid that was waiting was never released. Mr. Brown lied on camera to America and especially to those Americans who were in dire need of the help that never came. This is a colossal failure of the Federal Government to respond immediately to a disaster that came with a warning for God's sake. This administration who has bragged about being the only ones who can "keep us safer here at home from any threat any time any where" FAILED! It is obvious to most Americans and indeed to the world. For some reason that I do not know, Bush and his administration do not see this failure. It is beyond me. This huge, public, disgraceful failure is the fault of a lack of leadership, an utter incompetence of Bush and his people. I am sick of hearing their excuses about it...IT IS INEXCUSABLE! Heads should roll from the top down. Immediately. I think Bush should resign or be impeached. I think Chertoff should go. I am not the only one that I know who feels this way. Katrina is the last straw! I fear for my country and its decent, innocent people. I fear that if Bush is not accountable for this the country could descend into, I don't know what exactly, but the average American has had enough. We can't take it anymore. Frankly, I am appalled that any human being can defend what Bush did last week. He let his own people drown. More people died than needed to, from lack of water! He was completely inept, not only that but he remained on his regular schedule and on vacation? WHAT?
The blood of the Americans in New Orleans is on Bush's hands and on the hands of anyone who stands with him now. The needless suffering of these citizens whose lives were spared only because of local government is also on their hands. I am outraged by the failure of my Federal Government, of Bush, of his administration, of Mr. Brown and Mr. Chertoff, and of anyone who dares defend them or say that this response was "adequate." NO! IT WAS A FAILURE! I want an "INDEPENDENT" investigation into this complete and utter failure. I want it NOW, not six months from now! Accountability is coming to this administration and it's coming from the American people.

12. No, please, try and criticize one of our good senators some more.
Edited on Thu Sep-08-05 03:07 AM by nemo137
I mean, shit, it isn't like last time he touched off the one thing that was sure to piss off both the administration (because it's real close to true) and a big chunk of the American public (because despite everything, we like to think that we're still the good guys). What did you want him to do, stand on the senate floor and say "No, really, you guys in power, whom I have to work with because we havea bi-party system, are pretty much Nazi enablers." I believe what happened there was what we call a shitstorm, he did something stupid, and Rove did what he does best, and Durbin's only options were look like a looney, or apologize. Criticizing Brown, on the other hand, touches the wrong chord with the admin (because they can't admit to being wrong), but the right chord with everyone else (because face it, we all know that the man is a gold-plated fuckup). There's no way Rove will be able to chicken-wing him into backing down from that.

13. I can't believe a National Locater doesn't exist already. OMG!
After WW II, DPs put their names on LISTS saying they were safe and living in X city.... So, 50 FRIGGING years later, and we're basically doing the same thing? Just the lists can be online, too?

OMG.

19. EVERY DEMOCRAT MUST DEMAND IT
1. They ignored the warnings about 9/11

2. They ignored the warnings about Iraq NOT being an immenent threat, and if they went in they would need at least 500000 troops

3. They ignored the warnings about the storm and the situation

IT IS TIME FOR ARTICLES OF IMPEACHMENT TO BE BROUGHT UP!!!

21. Yes, but the whorish media is part of the Bush Propaganda
machine. We are hamstrung but they are looking so damn stupid! What's up is down. NO! I think not!

This criminal administration would already be up for trial if "the American people" could depend on AN HONEST USA "National Media."

I'm so sick of the obvious shills: Michelle Malkin, Charles Osgood, ole' Limbaugh and every damn Right Wing republican that they interview with NOTHING but softball questions.

Even the commentators who first act tough, end up rolling on their backs for a "tummy rub" within hours/day's later. They think that they are amusing us American sheeple with lame protestations.

Unfortunately for the corporate whores, the people are beginning to catch on to these lies and distortions.

Some of us ... well, many of us, just perhaps are not as stupid as our BLOATED and greedy "investor class" wants to believe.

22. This time stick by your call Durbin, please
Don't let them make you back down. Brown should be relieved of his duties ASAP, seeing as that he was never up to the job.

Thanks to Durbin for stepping up though. Good call!

Sonia
