State Senate passes bill to increase minimum wage (California)
State Senate passes bill to increase minimum wage
Schwarzenegger vetoed similar legislation last year
Christian Berthelsen, Chronicle Staff Writer

Thursday, September 8, 2005

Sacramento -- The state Senate passed a bill Wednesday to increase the minimum wage by $1 over the next two years and tie future increases to the pace of inflation, though it faces a likely veto by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The Senate passed the bill on a mostly party-line 26-13 vote with just one Republican, Sen. Abel Maldonado, R-Santa Maria, supporting it. The Assembly approved the minimum wage increase in June, so the measure now heads to the governor's desk.

The bill, AB48, would increase the minimum wage from $6.75 per hour by 50 cents in January 2006 and another 50 cents in January 2007. Beginning in January 2008, increases would go up by the same percentage as the annual rise in the Consumer Price Index, which measures the cost of a wide variety of goods.

"This is a bill about social responsibility," said Sen. Richard Alarcón, D-Sun Valley, during the Senate floor debate. "This makes a statement to businesses that paying a decent wage is a moral responsibility as much as it is an economic responsibility."

7. I think this would be good
How much is this California minimum wage today? Maybe $1 is 25% or 15% more and this is a big raise. I would like to get a 10% raise at work in two years, but the government here is stopping the Labor Unions from using our traditional voice and so I think i won't get a raise or not a big one. Without a minimum pay then people will have to work for very little. It is good to increase it! Good luck to California and I hope this silly Austrian governor does not do the veto.
