2. i'm wondering about these hospitals as well...
I haven't seen much information of the pre-storm evacuation, but it appears that 3 hospitals were in trouble afterwards. There must be way more than 3 hospitals in a city that size, no?

10. I Heard Different Stories
I heard stories of nurses at Charity Hospital & Tulane hand bagging patients because the generators failed and there was no power for ventilators.

There are all kinds of stories.

26. Well I heard that a lot of doctors and nurses
took many risks to their own health and well-being to save as many patients as they possibly could.

27. Well, I suspect you heard wrong, because I haven't heard
that once. Alot of med staff had no sleep for days, HAND BAGGED patients 24/7, drove away looters, didn't eat, kept their preemies alive, and tried to keep all of their patients alive, under horrible conditions. I have no idea what happened at that one nursing home, and won't judge until I find out. But, it appears most staff took their oaths to heart (many nurses -- my Mithra nd sister included -- take the Nightingale Oath) and were true heroes. Doctors at a convention set up triage centers, supplied from Walgreen pharmacies.

22. Here in NC we don't evacuate hospitals for hurricanes and
we're threatened with Cat 4 & 5 quite frequently. I've been trying to find out if other states do anything differently.

28. I think they try not to do it until they have to
Because so many patients will die from being moved.

7. That much time hasn't past
There hasn't been enough time to starve yet. More likely they are dehydrated and/or sick from exposure to the foul water.

12. 9000 stranded in hospitals as of Sept. 1
http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/nation/3335880

"Some of the most disturbing developments continued to take place at New Orleans hospitals, where as many as 9,000 people remained stranded."

This part is weird, Health and Human Services still clueless on Thursday. The storm hit on Monday:

"Calling the situation for refugees with chronic medical conditions dire, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt said Thursday that the government was rushing to open 40 emergency medical shelters across the Gulf Coast.
"It's still not clear exactly what medical care is most needed," Leavitt said in a television interview."

no telling how many there are. I heard news reporters being threatened with guns because they're taking pictures of dead bodies.

19. One of the physicians at the Charity Hospital was frantically call-
ing for help. Their generators were running down and they had many severely ill patients. A LOT OF BRAVE MEDICAL PERSONNEL STAYED. The only one I have heard of was a nursing home where many were left to drown. It is miserable, but these people had families too. Is what they did worse than GWB doing nothing to save these people?

24. I can put to rest some of the rumors
At least at Charity, nobody "ran off".

Charity had an emergency plan -- one shown to be inadequate, but the plan was followed, to my knowledge no one abandoned their patients.

There were only 6 physicians present for the entire hospital, which was (as stated above) the plan. They were supposed to be augmented within 24 hours in the case of a meltdown, it didn't happen.

None of the hospitals evacuated for the hurricane. In theory, they should have been strong enough to survive (which they were), it was the alter flooding, lack of electricity, and lack of supplies that caused them to go into critical situations.
