A 7.3 magnitude quake has struck the New Ireland region of Papua New Guinea.

The quake hit at 5:25 p.m. local time (17:25 Australian EST) but no reports of tsunamis or damage had come in from islands in the vicinity, the Rabaul Volcanological Observatory reported this evening from New Britain island, north-west of the quake zone.

"Because of the depth it's very unlikely to generate a tsunami," a spokesman said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said the earthquake measured 7.3 on the Richter scale, a figure also reported by the U.S. Geological Survey.
