WP: Texas Fires Lawyer After Story on Rove (talked to WP reporter)
Texas Fires Lawyer After Story on Rove
Talking to Post Reporter Called Violation

By Michael E. Ruane
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, September 10, 2005; Page A09

A staff attorney with the Texas secretary of state said yesterday that she was fired this week for violating press protocols when she spoke to a Washington Post reporter who was working on a story about presidential adviser Karl Rove.

Elizabeth Reyes, 30, of Austin said she was fired Tuesday after she was quoted in a Post story that ran Sept. 3 about tax deductions on Rove's homes in the District and in Texas.

Scott Haywood, a spokesman for Texas Secretary of State Roger Williams, confirmed yesterday that Reyes is no longer employed, but he declined to provide details, saying it was a personnel matter. Haywood had said late last Saturday that Reyes "was not authorized to speak on behalf of the agency."

The Post's story reported that Rove inadvertently received a District homestead tax deduction on his Palisades home, even though he had not been eligible for the benefit for more than three years. Rove was eligible for the deduction when he bought the home in 2001, the story said, but a change in the tax law in 2002 made the deduction available only to District property owners who do not vote elsewhere. Rove is registered to vote in Texas.

The District's Office of Tax and Revenue accepted blame for the mistake in a letter to Rove, expressing regret that it had failed to rescind the deduction. Rove agreed to reimburse the city an estimated $3,400 in back taxes, and a White House spokeswoman said it had been an innocent misunderstanding....

1. I guess Rove just decided to wait until the facts caught up with him.
SOP for Rove. Grab the benefits, and then claim an "innocent misunderstanding." What a puke. I can only imagine what would happen if a high-profile Democrat did the same thing.

17. These fuckers are horrible!! They have all the money and what they don't
have, they control and they can't pay taxes? It is outrageous. Even Jesus Christ paid his taxes and didn't complain about it.

2. Always a "no biggie" when they mess up
And to put it in perspective, he paid more in back taxes than the evacuees are getting on their debit cards. Plus I'm sure someone is watching EXACTLY where and on what the money is spent. Ammo for the 2006 election is my guess... nothing better to fire up "the base" than "your tax dollars funding welfare programs that allow the recipient to buy X. Can you afford to buy X or shop at Y"????

10. This is Imperial Amerika. She's lucky she didn't "commit suicide"
This is a mild punishment for the Busheviks. Wait until you see what their grandchildren are going to do to "traitors" like this woman.

I envy old people their age, right now.

11. As a matter of fact, he does
Pretty close to it.

Now I know a little bit how it must have felt in Nazi Germany in the 30s. At least these Bushevik monsters aren't as violent as the previous incarnation.

(yes, yes, I know that they would be if THEY were in Germany in the 1930s, but they aren't so for a little while longer, we are safe)

Texas lawyer fired for talking about Rove
Sep 10, 2005, 16:25 GMT

AUSTIN, TX, United States (UPI) -- An attorney at the Texas Secretary of State`s office has been fired for talking to a reporter about President Bush`s adviser Karl Rove.

The Washington Post reports that Elizabeth Reyes confirmed Friday she has been fired for answering questions in a Post story that ran Sept. 3.

Reyes was fired Tuesday but Scott Haywood, a spokesman for Texas Secretary of State Roger Williams, wouldn`t comment besides saying that Reyes 'was not authorized to speak on behalf of the agency.'

The story was about tax deductions on two rental cottages that Rove and his wife own in Kerr County, Tex.

Although the Roves were eligible for a tax break in 2001 when they bought the Texas property, a 2002 change to the tax law made them ineligible. They received the break inadvertently, the Post said.

23. What is it about the GOP and real estate taxes???
They are all ripoff artists--Rove, Santorum, Mitt the Shit Romney...all thieves, and you know damn well if it was Joe Sixpack, they'd throw the bastard in jail. But since it's a GOP politician, the finding is always that the tax break is "INADVERTENT."

That is such BULLSHIT--you have to ASK for those tax breaks to get them; they sure as hell aren't handed out like Santa tossing penny candy at Macy's....

25. Hmmm, I tried to register to vote in Texas a couple weeks ago
...and that she had explained in the interviews that an individual's intent to return to Texas is a primary factor in qualifying for residency.

In response to The Post's story, Haywood called the paper to say that Rove could register to vote in Texas as long as he intended to return.

We are building a house in Texas, but it's not quite finished yet, so we haven't actually moved in. In early August I went to the county courthouse to register. I was asked for some proof that I lived at that address, either a drivers license or even a letter addressed to me there. I didn't have either so I wasn't allowed to register yet.

Nobody said a durned thing about "intent to return" to Texas, which was my primary residence several years ago. Seems like if I'm gonna move in in a couple weeks, that ought to be as good as Rove claiming he's gonna come back in a couple years. x(

27. There are two problems here?
One is the back taxes which KKKarl says he will pay back, "inadvertent" tax break on his home(s). The second problem is where Uncle KKKarl votes, which seems to have touched off some nerves. Here is a summary of the WP article I found earlier.

http://www.wacotrib.com/news/content/gen/ap/TX_Rove_Voting.html

CREW sent the complaint Tuesday after the Washington Post reported that local residents, including the Democratic Party chairman, said they never have seen Rove or his wife in the two rental cottages that they claim as their residence for voting purposes.

"Karl Rove is manipulating the system at the least. I think he is flat out lying," said Melanie Sloan, executive director of CREW, a liberal group. Sloan said the group will forward its complaint to Kerr County.

Elizabeth Reyes, an elections attorney in the Secretary of State's election division, told the Post that property ownership "doesn't make that a residence."

All this arose because Rove has been receiving for 3 1/2 years a homestead tax break and cap on his property tax for his Washington, D.C., home, valued at more than $1.1 million. He also was getting a homestead exemption in Texas for his Austin home he sold in 2003.
