State probing Forrester contributions (New Jersey)
State probing Forrester contributions
He says allegations are political and an effort to avoid other issues
Saturday, September 10, 2005

BY RICK HEPP AND JEFF WHELAN
Star-Ledger Staff

The state Division of Criminal Justice has opened an investigation into Democrats' allegations that Republican Doug Forrester made nearly a half-million dollars in illegal campaign donations, according to a high-ranking state official who requested anonymity.

The decision comes a little more than a week after the campaign of U.S. Sen. Jon Corzine, Forrester's Democratic rival in the governor's race, urged Attorney General Peter Harvey to open such a probe.

Democrats contend the Republican businessman broke a 1911 criminal statute that prohibits campaign contributions by regulated companies, such as insurers, and their owners. Forrester dismisses the allegations as politically motivated and an attempt to distract from other issues in the campaign.

In the coming weeks, investigators will be seeking corporate files and minutes of company meetings from BeneCard Services Inc. and Heartland Fidelity Insurance, two Forrester-owned companies, the high-ranking state official said. The case has been assigned to Deputy Director Ron Susswein.

1. Don't beg the question Doug.
1. Did you make those contributions?
2. Were they illegal according to the law?
