Evacuee center delayed for BR

One-stop aid awaits location decision

By EMILY KERN

Advocate staff writer

In Monroe, Shreveport, Alexandria and Lafayette, Hurricane Katrina evacuees can go to a one-stop center where they can get help from federal, state and local resources.
But in Baton Rouge, which has the largest concentration of evacuees in the state, no such center exists almost two weeks after Katrina struck.

The Baton Rouge location is still being planned, said Win Henderson, a spokesman for Hurricane Katrina Recovery, an umbrella group of federal, state and local agencies.

1. BR doesn't want poor minorities in the city.
Did you read the comments from the woman in the town where thetemporary mortuary is located? She was glad to have the dead bodies and not the evacuees.
in her town. Wouldn't want "those people" near her, I'm sure.

2. There are people like that everywhere.
I assure you not all of BR feels this way. I have not heard one complaint from even my Republican acquaintances. Traffic is almost at a standstill throughout the day, but I doubt it is the homeless causing this.

3. That is good to know.
My in-laws evacauted from Lacombe, LA to Lexington, KY. I hope my sister-in-law can go home in a few months. Her son has gone back to repair the house. They are very lucky: they still have a home. o many do not.

Good luck down in Baton Rouge. We are thinking of you all during this difficult time.
