6:38 A.M. - LITTLE ROCK, AR (AP): Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee says the aid his state is providing to victims of Hurricane Katrina is being given almost entirely without federal help.

The governor says the state is doing a good job of helping storm refugees but says he is frustrated that people within the federal government do not seem to grasp the enormity of the disaster.

Huckabee said that a Federal Emergency Management Agency official asked him on Wednesday whether Arkansas had taken in any refugees. Huckabee noted that Arkansas had about 75,000 refugees.

6. FEMA is so pathetic
Clinton (and James Lee Watt) had made FEMA such an effective government organization. Now, thanks to the Chimp and his gang of political parasites, it's a gang that couldn't win a game of "find your foot".

By the way, welcome to DU, nickyt. I think you'll fit right in.

7. The lower-downs in FEMA aren't so bad
FEMA has been helpful and responsive at the lowest levels, at least in Gulfport, where I was visiting. One guy there is known as Fema Mike, and he's been on top of the relief efforts. He's got a lot of travel trailers he's having set up on vacant lots for people, and he's organizing rental properties to help people find homes. He's a popular face on the Coast right now.

But the people running FEMA are fucked up. They aren't finding enough trailers, they don't have enough personnel, they have phone lines and a web site that are almost impossible to connect to. There is a lot of frustration and anger at them. They still seem to believe that the federal government has no real role in disaster recovery, and that poor people really are less deserving of aid than rich people. The people they are helping should be patient and grateful.

I guess they figure our billions in tax dollars should only be used for boondoggle wars, not in helping the unfortunate.
