Chicago Tribune: Fiscal conservatives riled
As Republicans rush to make amends for a slow initial response to Hurricane Katrina by doling out billions of dollars in aid, GOP leaders in the process are angering their core supporters and dividing their members in Congress by greatly expanding the federal deficit.

The $62.3 billion that Congress approved for hurricane relief in the last week, with much more to come, is an enormous, unforeseen boost in federal spending, and so far there has been no effort to make comparable cuts in spending elsewhere.

In closed-door meetings, fiscal conservatives have begged their colleagues not to put the cost of disaster relief on the government credit card for future generations to carry.

Among those who have protested in these private sessions is Rep. Jeff Flake (news, bio, voting record) (R-Ariz.), a fiscal conservative who said his colleagues greeted his suggestion that disaster relief be offset by other cuts with "stone cold silence." He added, "You would have thought I was a Martian."

2. Now they complain?
They spend a few hundred billion $ on waging war on abstract nouns and no one bats an eye lid, spend a fraction of that on relief for a natural disaster and they start to bitch about it.

THEY are the reason the country is in debt, all on purpose in some insane desire to "starve the beast."

Their IDIOT priorities and stingey, pennywise-pound foolish Reaganomics crap is what did this.

The really pathetic part is what it finally took for even SOME people to start noticing this. All the death. All the horror. All the starving. All the thirst. All the sickness. All the abandonment. All the homelessness. All the poisoned water. All the flooding and wreckage. All the loss. Dear God...

One would hope that assholes like this would have their karma come back - exclusively on THEMSELVES. Unfortunately, it was karma SO monstrous that it spilled over onto our whole nation - if not the world. Those victims on the Gulf Coast are only the latest and most obvious.

These "drown the government in the bathtub" people deserve to go to Hell when they die - for all the suffering THEY have caused. I hope they do.

Meantime, we can at least work toward their being turned out of power... so help us

Visualize IMPEACHMENT!!!!
And then go DO something about it.

5. Exactly. I didn't hear the "fiscal conservatives" moaning about the Iraq
invasion.

They're just mad about money going to poor black people.

I've never heard them complaining about money going to rich Floridan hurrican victims either.

7. Bingo.
Let future generations pay for war and carnage? You betcha. But for compassion and healing and restoration? Fuggedaboudit.

9. They have no reason to "defend themselves" ....
The Dems are sound asleep, except for Howard Dean gathering together the grassroots.

But once they flip the "on" switch for the computers that count the votes, none of it will matter....and the republicans KNOW it.

There is only one party in Washington, DC, and in many State governments: the CORPORATE party. And they OWN the vote counting machines. All attempts to stop the Diebold/ES&S's of the world have been met with corporate bribing/lobbying of officials.

Nothing short of civil unrest/rioting ....complete with bloodshed, is going to change the vote counting machines. And, at present, even a lot of so-called "liberals" are still denying there's a problem.

10. Weird
Infrasturcture repair / improvement is one of the few things that fiscal conservatives actually believe debt is ok for.
