KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - The Taliban's former ambassador to Pakistan was released from the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Afghan state TV reported Monday as it showed him meeting with an official in Kabul.
Mullah Abdul Salam Zaeef, who served as the hard-line regime's international spokesman in the early days of the U.S. bombing campaign in 2001, was shown meeting with the head of Afghanistan's peace and reconciliation commission, Sibghatullah Mujaddedi.
The TV report said Zaeef was released from Guantanamo because of the commission's efforts, and the meeting took place Monday. It did not say when he was released, and commission and other officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
Zaeef became the voice of the Taliban after the United States launched airstrikes in October 2001 in retaliation for the Sept. 11 attacks. He held frequent news conferences at the Afghan Embassy in Pakistan that were broadcast worldwide.
