Marine on leave says being in Iraq was like being in hell
HANCOCK, Mich. A U-S marine on leave from Iraq says he's relieved to be home but would return if ordered to do so.

Twenty-one-year-old Lance Corporal Aron Jarvi is an air defense gunner. He returned to the Upper Peninsula's Hancock last week after a seven-month deployment in Al Asad.

He compares being in Iraq to being in hell. He recalls the heat and says QUOTE "everybody's always trying to kill you."

He says communicating with loved ones was difficult and he often couldn't call or e-mail for a month at a time.

After two weeks with his family, Jarvi is scheduled to return to a military base in North Carolina.

1. "Everybody's always trying to kill you"?
Hmm. All those people who *wanted* us there must have been shipped off to Syria with the WMDs...

4. What happened to the WMD?
What a moron! This idiot cannot even realize that he is in Iraq on account of a lie, and he still wants to go back. Why? Did Jesus tell him to?

6. Where do you get that from?
His attitude toward the war is never mentioned anywhere in the article. All it says is he'd go back if required to - hardly a ringing endorsement of the "mission" and certainly nowhere in the ballpark of your presumed "he still wants to go back". His willingness to return is probably more attributable to his sense of duty/obligation and fidelity toward those with whom he served.

2. well, at least the great Midwest unwashed masses are
hearing the truth ...no one is throwing flowers, or glad we are there. Woodtv is in Holland MI...when the small towns and rural areas turned against the war in Vietnam, it was the beginning of the end. This is Vietnam redux.

7. Mari, have you been watching WOTV (WOOD) for a long time?
Do you remember Captain Woody? He hosted the cartoon show every afternoon at 4:00.

Do you still live in SW Michigan? My sister recently moved to St. Joseph. I was there over Labor Day weekend. I know the St. Joe/Benton Harbor community has it's problems, but I really enjoyed the beach and the riverfront area of St. Joe.

3. Brave marines
I can't believe they do what they do. Their patriotism deserves so much better reasons for war then what was at hand. Bush admin fails it all

11. he probably says he'll go back because
the Marines are very loyal to each other. He probably wants to protect his fellow Marines.
My son is now in Kuwait after just completing his second tour in Iraq...he flies back to the states Friday. He's a liberal, a Marine, who voted for Kerry (and Cynthia McKinney).
It's not about politics for many of these young people - America's politics or Iraq's politics. It's about doing the job they enlisted to do...and even more important, protecting each other.
I can't say I understand this...but, then, I've never been a Marine.
