Poll: Floridians Not Likely to Join Military
http://www.theledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050913/NEWS/509130349/1004

Study also finds 46% say war in Iraq is unjustified, while 43% support it.

The Associated Press

With the U.S. at war, more than 70 percent of Floridians said they were less likely to enlist in the military or encourage their children to join, a new poll shows.

There wasn't much support for reinstating the draft either -- 72 percent of respondents opposed that, according to the poll done for The Florida Times-Union and South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Pentagon officials have said they have no plans to bring back the draft, abolished in 1973.

Nationally, active-duty Army recruiting exceeded its monthly goals in June and July after falling short from February though May.

Active-duty Marine Corps, Air Force and Navy were at or slightly ahead of their year-todate goals through July.

And that goes double for Floridians with the last name Bush.

from U.S. territories such as Saipan, Guam and others. Don't have a link but it was reported on DU a couple of weeks ago. Poor dumb kids who want to get off an island. Article complete with interviews of the kids.

3. A little strange math...
43% support the war.
70% say they're 'less likely' to enlist or encourage their children.
So, 13% of the people who support the war (MINIMUM) are 'less likely to enlist or encourage thier children to'.
I wonder how that 13% breaks down demographically...

12. "the people are confused"? I don't think so. The people are brilliant
Think about being able to convince someone else's 18 and 19 year old kids to go off and become an invalid or die guarding oil pipelines for Halliburton so these Floridians can can keep their fat asses in monster gas guzzlers rolling on down the highway while listening to country music. No they are not confused at all.

11. Repuke Floridians would rather have you and me fight their war for them.
I visited Florida last year, seemed that every few feet there was a "I love bush" or an "abortion is murder" bill-board. My brother who thinks bush is a saint because he got a huge tax cut, lives there. Seems there are a whole lot of repukes who want you and me to give our lives for their war. But of course neither my brother nor the other repukes would want their children to fight in their war.

13. Florida Sucks anyway!
We need to let Florida cecede from the union. I hate that place, for reasons well beyond the obvious.
Wish I had a still from that Bugs Bunny cartoon where he takes a saw and cuts right along the Florida state line, gives it a kick and says "South America, take it away!"

18. Okay, let me wrap my head around this
Out of the Florida masses, 43% say they support the war in Iraq. Yet, less than 30% of Floridians would enlist or send their children off to fight the war, which means that at least 13% of Floridians like wars, but don't like fighting them. And 72% of Floridians don't want to see the draft come back. So that's at least 15% of Floridians who apparently believe in magic, because wars don't fight themselves.

Maybe they should have been asked if they'd support higher taxes so we could hire mercenaries. Or would that question have tipped off some of the brighter lights among that 15%?

19. SOUTH FLORIDA IS AN ISLAND OF BLUE and red
South Florida has the sixth largest population in the United States and is decidedly democratic.
But it is a strange place; full of craziness.

We've had the 9-11 killers live among us;
We fucked up the 2000 elections;
Dr. (!) D. James Kennedy at Coral Ridge preaches firebrand neo fascism;
We've got Rush Limbaugh and his oxy's;
We've got mini banana republics with suicidal polito-crooks;
We've got Jack Ambramoff doing casino boat deals and Gus Boulis getting executed gangland style;
And the west coast of Florida. Terri Schiavo. Nuff said.
It seems like every major national trauma comes through or is associated with Florida.

But the weather is great in winter!
