DeLay declares 'victory' in war on budget fat

By Amy Fagan and Stephen Dinan
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
September 14, 2005

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay said yesterday that Republicans have done so well in cutting spending that he declared an "ongoing victory," and said there is simply no fat left to cut in the federal budget.
Mr. DeLay was defending Republicans' choice to borrow money and add to this year's expected $331 billion deficit to pay for Hurricane Katrina relief. Some Republicans have said Congress should make cuts in other areas, but Mr. DeLay said that doesn't seem possible. (/snip)

oh, it's quite good. See, even though we're spending more than ever before, we're spending more efficiently, on fewer things, than before. see?

3. Ok, what are we missing here??
Okay, I'm a liberal (y'know, the ones that LOVE spending?) and I don't believe for a second that there is a single program that couldn't use a trim here & there.

More importantly, have they lost their minds?? Why would he say something so politically stupid?? Even if it were true, much of their base believes that all Govt spending should be abolished (except military, of course), so why would you piss them off on purpose?

No, there's something else at work here, but I'm not clever enough to spot what it is just yet.

8. Oh, yeah
This from the guy who, in August, tacked on a $1.5 billion award for energy research in his own district to passed legislation without a conference committee vote.
