Bush readying new initiatives for Katrina speech

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush, stung by criticism of a slow federal response to Hurricane Katrina, was preparing new initiatives to announce for storm-devastated areas in a nationally televised address on Thursday.

"This speech will be an opportunity for the president to update the American people about the latest developments of our recovery and talk about the way forward as we begin rebuilding," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said.

Bush believes the vision for rebuilding should be "locally inspired," but that the country as a whole needs to be committed to that longer-term effort, McClellan told reporters on Air Force One returning to Washington from New York, where the president attended the U.N. summit.

"There will be some new initiatives that he will talk about in the remarks as well," he said, but declined to provide details.

4. As I said already...
This is something Bush can do from the White House. What I think is angering me more than anything else is that he insists on using the area as a backdrop for his photo-ops and pull vital resources to be the props for his display.

Bush, stay away from the area and let the people there do their jobs!!!

Even if this was a Democratic President doing this I would feel the same way. I do wonder if anyone has died during one of his photo-ops when he had the resources tied up that could have saved them.

6. New initiatives, errrr, trojan horses
Look for plenty of repug pet projects like school vouchers and massive corporate tax cuts with no mention whatsoever of Bush's denying prevailing competitive wages for rebuilders, big giveaways to crony-led companies, and the like.

What scumbags.

10. Shouldn't that read 'Rove readying new initiatives...'??
Bush wouldn't know a new initiative if it bit him in the butt.

13. As an ex-resident of Lower Manhattan for the past
oh, 4 years or so... I can't help but wonder when they are going to do something here.

I see lots of new firehouses in the suburbs, new cop toys and such, but there is still a big fucking hole in the ground with no clear plan on what to do with it.
