Reuters Photog Appears to Capture Bush at U.N. Writing Note About 'Bathroom Break'

By E&P Staff

NEW YORK In what seems destined to become one of the most yacked about photos of the month, if not year, a Reuters photographer today seems to have captured President George W. Bush scribbling a note to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice suggesting that he needed to take a "bathroom break" during a session at the United Nations.

The photo by Denver-based Rick Wilking, taken over a man's shoulder, shows an official -- identified in the caption (at Reuters' official site) as President Bush -- scribbling in pencil on a small white piece of paper the words: "I think I MAY NEED A BATHROOM break?"

The caption at the Reuters photo site reads:

"U.S. President George W. Bush writes a note to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during a Security Council meeting at the 2005 World Summit and 60th General Assembly of the United Nations in New York September 14, 2005. World leaders are exploring ways to revitalize the United Nations at a summit on Wednesday but their blueprint falls short of Secretary-General Kofi Annan's vision of freedom from want, persecution and war."

4. It Maybe Be Different In Diplomatic Circles
I don't know all the diplomatic protocals, but maybe you don't just say, "excuse me" and leave the room.

I remember reading somewhere that if you are at a reception, you do not leave before the guest of honor, it is poor taste. Maybe there is something similar going on here.

11. Been there, done that
It's really quite permissible to excuse oneself to go to the bathroom. Of course, a real diplomat would be sure to go before the event starts, just to avoid this situation. That said, one need not ask permission to go potty.

135. Welcome to DU!
Disgusting, isn't it?

One would think he might have had the presence of mind to go take care of that sort of thing BEFORE he went in and sat down at the big table for the big meeting?

Is he SO self-absorbed that he doesn't even think ahead to that minimal consideration? Or is he just so accustomed to everyone bowing and scraping while he does whatever he wants - to bother with decorum or common courtesy?

Well, considering his mom's penchant for common courtesy, I can understand why the little dauphin never learned this. So he's got his nanny there and has to check with her, 'eh?

I thought this was bogus until I saw that Editor & Publisher had picked this up. And Reuters swears by its authenticity. Whoa! Wonder what else is out there? Of course, NOW, you're liable to have all kinds of photographers with their eyes peeled for another one of those "gotcha" moments. The pile-on is upon us. Same thing for "Go Fuck Yourself, mr. cheney." I bet there are all kinds of guerrilla gonzos out there, even now, plotting for their own media moment when they might be able to pull that stunt, too. From the "Bring 'em on" file, I guess you'd say, but human nature being what it is, I think it can be expected in the future. I believe the perception now is - "Tough shit. These guys are asking for it."

88. Since when does Junior care about "poor taste?"
This is a guy who takes firefighters away from rescuing dying people along the Gulf Coast just so he can have a staged photo-op with them. "Poor taste" is something he has in his mouth when he wakes up in the morning. Beyond that, the phrase means nothing to him.

I just think it's hysterical that Reuters is now so openly contemptuous of the boy king that they would put this on the wires.

he didn't think to go to the bathroom beforehand and asks permission?

Why does he feel the need to share this information with her? Obviously from the wording of the note the situation is "iffy" - he might need to go. Why is she privy to this? Is he asking for her to get a comic book to take along?

144. A bigger issue to me is that he's so indifferent to proper protocol
that it doesn't even occur to him to make a pit stop BEFORE going into the big meeting. You can't take care of a little business beforehand so you're good for the next few hours, asshole? You don't even think THAT FAR AHEAD? Man! I guess he killed more brain cells during his "youthful indiscretion" period than I thought.

He's been on this "job" for FIVE years now. This isn't the first time he's been to the UN, either. By now, he should know better. He should have a sense of the finer points of international diplomacy, unless of course he just doesn't give a shit. Which, I think, is what underlies all of this. He just doesn't care. What a disgrace.

As Bill Maher urged him, the other day: "why don't you do what you do best: lose interest and walk away?" I think we're at the "lose interest" part already - probably have been there for some time now. It's the second part we need to work on now.

These are not questions anyone with half a brain has to ask.

104. I'm with you on this (so far)
This is just that bit *too* weird, even for that cretin.

The note appeared to say the following:

I think I
MAY NEED
A BATHROOM
break?

Is this possib(le)

Why the line breaks?
Why the odd mixture of upper case & lower case?

What's the risk of going overboard on this and it bouncing back
with a Rovian spin? (e.g., "GWB was about to reply to a very personal
question from XYZ who was bravely continuing despite an embarrassing
illness. See how the Left not only slander our brave & intelligent
president but humiliate the loyal XYZ at this unfortunate time.")

(It's strange though, I don't question the embarrassing stupidity
and insecurity of the message - just its appearance on a plate
like this ...)

36. Fan this to everyone you know tomorrow
Think how bad this is for him.

Just when he is at his absolute low in the polls...just when he has abdicated leadership in Katrina...just when he has given 72 hrs notice for a primetime address for him to take his leadership back...

...he writes a note to, depending on your POV, his subordinate (if you're a supporter) or his tutor/master (if you're a detractor), asking for permission to go to the bathroom.

Tomorrow, this will hit some papers and be on TV and radio. Tomorrow night...just when he wants the "leader" coverage to take over...it will be on the Leno/Letterman/O'Brian/Daily Show monologues, and then MORE papers will have it on Friday as a funny/cute sidebar.

He doesn't know to go to the bathroom before a UN meeting. He's not sure if he can go during a UN meeting. He has to write a note to a cabinet member prompting her to consider this burning issue containing two questions (one, does he really need to go, and two, is such a thing possible).

How can he look like a leader again tomorrow with this in the sidebars?

122. "How the hell did we get the most idiotic man alive in the WH?" Simple.
His buds at Diebold and ES&S own and control the tabulation of our votes with "trade secret" proprietary programming code in the new electronic voting systems--code so secret that not even our secretaries of state are permitted to review it. Not that they would care (they probably have future job offers, and they sold out our right to vote when they signed these "trade secret" contracts for their states, in the first place). The Bushites set this all up, under the guise of "election reform," with Congress appropriating $4 billion to the states to purchase these extremely insecure, hackable, "not ready for prime time," electronic voting machines, with no controls on lavish lobbying or on "trade secret" vote tabulation, and with Tom Delay blockading a paper trail requirement (no recount possible--no way to verify)--and you think they didn't USE it to stay in power?!

Ha, ha.

Not so simple. How to get rid of Diebold and ES&S? (Throw these infernal election theft machines into 'Boston Harbor,' I say! --or a Louisiana levee might do!)

---------

I favor the theory that he was bored--and wanted out of representing the free world. And doesn't give a crap (ahem) what the leaders of other countries think. That's why the tentative "I think I may need...". He doesn't really need to piss or poop. He wants an exit and doesn't know if it's possible diplomatically. Although, with Bush Jr., even the wildest scenarios seem feasible--truly (even dominatrix Rice)--I think "bathroom break" is code for "if you don't get me out of here, I might just start pounding my shoe on the table". Also believable: a drug break (needs a booster of some kind).

It would be interesting to know what happened next.

--------

What's astonishing is that Reuters would publish this photo. THAT'S news. (They could be fed up with their reporters getting offed in Iraq.) Also surprising, it just occurred to me: How did a photographer get so close to Bush and behind him--to be able to take this photo?

150. I was speaking tongue in cheek
My retarded son sobbed his heart out when he saw on TV that people had been left to drown. While Bush was sleeping and Zombileeza was shopping for shoes, my son, too handicapped to read or write, was begging me to take him to where the people were drowning so he could save them. He wanted to save any sharks that might be swimming in the poisonous water too.

I have a mother who is every bit as evil as Babs, who Hates anyone who is retarded, yet this son of mine is kind to her and tells her gently she just needs to learn to understand.

Prime Minister of Japan because he refused to leave a state occaision before it was too late?

Bush is determined to not make the same mistakes his father made and apparently both Bush boys have a problem with er controlling bodily functions.

Besides, how does one coordinate the logistics of this situation? I mean here he is in a meeting of the UN General Assembly. Does Condi send Bolton running up to Kofi Annan to ask him to stop the meeting because the Leader of the Free World is about to have an accident? Does Annan explain the real reason or does he do the diplomatic thing and call a 10 minute recess because the President has to deal with--er an internal situation--or does he let the meeting drag on and savor every minute of it?

So many things to ponder.

A bullshit war full of lies (Kuwaiti babies tossed out of incubators, uh, that never happened?? Brave Kuwaiti people, who turned out to be Palestinian guest workers who stayed behind while the elites evacuated to Monte Carlo???), an out of touch idiot (supermarket scanners, what are those???)....this is just the 21st Century version of ralphing on the Japanese dignitary...he had to steal two elections to try to one-up his "deddy" but it is all just a little bit of history repeating, with louder booms and more horrific consequences.

There are protocols in place for this very circumstance. You just have to do your advance planning and coordination, but then again, none of the guys at the UN particularly like Bolton, and maybe no one told him what the signal was, or they may have been punishing monkeyboy's sphincter in retribution.

I'm just amazed they let a camera that close without the mandatory rose filter. They must be panicking about this breach of security.

131. Yeah, I'm wondering about this, too. How did the picture get taken?
DU photographers, what are the logistics of this photo (i.e., telephoto lenses, etc.)? You rarely see photos from behind the Prez on occasions like this. I'm thinking, Reuters is really pissed off at Bush (slaughter of their reporters in Iraq, etc.), and others pissed off? ...Secret Service? UN security? Karl Rove? ...?

I have a theory about Rove, re: Bush's obvious lack of a spin machine in the first 3-4 days of Katrina. Rove on strike, negotiating his Treasongate pardon. I was seriously wondering about that photo op, early on, with Daddy Bush and Clinton standing behind Bush Jr., when Bush Jr. seemed to be out there, all on his own, in the media--eating cake with McCain, etc. Sure didn't seem to have his normal support system. All his gang AWOL--Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld, Rove....

And I was also thinking Cheney was given the "keys" to LA, in exchange for not ratting on Bush in Treasongate. Once all the contracts were secured (Halliburton, the first), then he crawls out of his rathole for a photo op--VERY late in the week, re Katrina.

Note: As it turns out, Cheney wasn't "gone fishing" in Wyoming, as we were led to believe. He was ordering the ground crews in Mississippi to work all night repairing a GAS PIPELINE taking TEXAS gas through LA and Miss. to the NORTHEAST, with one rural Miss. hospital already on generators and another threatened with loss of power. Crews thought they were working all night in very dangerous conditions to help the hospitals and hurricane victims, and only found out later they were restoring power to a gas pipeline, a priority ordered by the V-P. Cheney was also purchasing an estate in...Maine, was it? Busy guy.

I think the White House was in serious disarray during Katrina, because of Treasongate, and a division has developed within the Bush Cartel (the indictable vs. the unindictable). It makes sense--but it's like trying to read entrails, figuring out what's going on with this dark regime. I do think we may have been looking at a threatened Cheney coup (with Rove in league, but having his own problems), and that it still might be possible that forces are in play to remove Bush (used up, useless, whacked out, just a puppet anyway), and install Cheney as El Supremo.

We have to keep reminding ourselves WHO has the reins of power, finger on the nuke button, command of a vast security apparatus, and has no qualms about slaughtering people in Iraq or Louisiana, and for whom there has been zero accountability, thus far, despite billions and billions stolen from us in Iraq, and no accountability on the horizon, due to Bushite-controlled electronic voting machines--and be prepared for the worst.

And I'm not talking about figurehead Bush. Technically, he has the power, and things happen under his signature. But I think he just takes orders, and may now be conflicted about who to take orders from, because of cracks in the regime and in the Cartel behind the regime . On the one side, Cheney (one of the indictable) and Rumsfeld (other motives?) who want to nuke Iran and Syria, and get martial law here? Vs. Rice (has deniability on Treasongate?), aligned with Daddy Bush and the more diplomatic-minded element (with Clinton maybe trying to support what shred of legitimacy remains, and stay close to the situation?).

And the plan was to let Cheney loot Louisiana, to buy him off (--to get him to not rat on Bush)? (Bush was sent on a mission to strongarm Blanco to get martial law and White House control of LA.) (She balked, because of FEMA failures, and because it was so disgusting that they were using the sick and dying poor as an extortion item--no martial law, no aid. Result: a mixed situation, with Halliburton, et al, having to work in and around LA Nat'l Guard, not shoot people outright, and moderate their goals with local politics.)

Hopeful signs: Blanco (You go, girl! Get everything you can for your people!). SOMEBODY thinks it's a bad idea to nuke the Middle East (maybe Israel even). A news media freed from Karl Rove is a wonder to behold. Brief as it was.

-------

THE PHOTO: The trouble with this photo and its publication is that the problem is NOT BUSH. The problem is the total lack of accountability of those who are controlling Bush, and our inability to know what our fate might be, at the hands of these people, and our utter powerlessness to control it. THAT's what we must address--with, in my opinion, immediate attention to our only mechanism of power--our vote!

It could be just that Reuters is good and pissed off. But there ARE other signs that Bush is being dumped, and/or that there is a power struggle going on, with things maybe only temporarily calmed down.

Rumsfeld was not really on vacation during Katrina. He was busy bombing the shit out of a village on the Syrian border. And yesterday or so, Syria came back with a denial of any border problem. A "Gulf of Tonkin"-type incident coming? --to bolster the indictable faction of the Bush Cartel, and shut Fitzgerald up, or provide an excuse to IGNORE and DEFY Grand Jury indictments? They've gotten away with SO MUCH--in their utter contempt for the law--a scenario of defiance of the courts on Treasongate, amidst Congress declaring war on Syria, is not an unreasonable guess at what might be brewing.

Bush humiliating himself before the world (again) may be the least of our worries.

Hey, I understand your position, for I dislike Bush as much as the next guy.

But, damn, this man is supposedly our LEADER. I wish that faux swagger of his was backed up just a little bit by reality, you know?

124. Now I KNOW they are incompetent
It is customary for senior leaders to very quickly develop a code for crap breaks, insulin, get me another drink, get this asshole away from me, whatever the issue might be, that the staff and bagcarriers understand, so they can swing into action and clear the way and get the principal to where he or she needs to be. Sometimes it is just a word, sometimes a hand signal, but I have never seen anything quite like that--a full blown note?? Is this real, or a well done 'shop?'

I guess the monkey does not get out enough. He attends so few meetings that he never has had to really THINK or worry about that second cuppa coffee kicking in, demanding a massive poop, while he is far from his hopper and unable to sit and read a picture book while working out the issues, as it were.

128. When you've got to go, you've got to go,
So I understand the people here who sympathize with his apparent predicament, but why be so explicit? Why not something along the lines of "Would a break be possible?" or "What would the protocol be if I needed a brief break?" Surely Condi knows him well enough to get the hint.

I am not, and have no aspirations to be, a world leader, and I wouldn't put the fact that I needed to go potty in writing.

130. Oh, it's worse than that.

I would think nothing of a simple statement:

"I need a break."

Or even a question about whether he can take a break at that time:

"Can I take a break soon?"

But the kicker in this memo is that * is asking whether or not he NEEDS a break, as if someone else would know better than he would. That, more than anything, makes him look like a buffoon. Begs the reply of:

"I don't know, Georgie. DO you need a break?"

142. Yup, I agree--the wording is weird. Why does he have to spell out
"bathroom break"? Why not just, "I need a break"? And why put a question mark at the end? Makes me think it's code. I'd sure like to know who was speaking at the time, and what happened next. Or maybe the question is: Who was ABOUT TO speak? Is Bush saying, "If so and so's up next, then don't I need a 'bathroom break' (excuse to leave the room)?" If Bush weren't such a lamebrain (and basket case), I'd be convinced it was code. But, given that it's Bush, who knows?

But I still think the startling things are that this photo got taken at all, and that Reuters published it. You just DON'T DO that to world leaders! For a reputable news organization to do it, it's like a declaration of war--or, in this case, a response to the Bush Cartel's war against Reuters. (I don't know the current death toll for Reuters' journalists in Iraq, but I know they've been hardest hit, in some really questionable killings, starting with the initial targeting of the Reuters floor in the Palestine Hotel in Baghdad early in the invasion.)

I also think that things like this don't just "happen" to presidents--not in a highly controlled situation like this one. Maybe a slipup on the campaign trail, that sort of thing, where happenstance can occur (somebody leaves the mike "on" by accident)--but not a highly managed UN appearance, and especially given this excessively managed presidency. How did Karl Rove, and/or Secret Service, and/or private Cartel security, and/or UN security, LET a reporter get that angle, that position, for a photo--behind him, over his shoulder? A behind the prez photo is rare. (Didn't they ban them in the debate rules? --and the "wire" on his back photo was against the rules, or something? I dimly remember that.)

Was it just Rick Wilking's (the photog's) lucky day? Right place, right time? Or is somebody SETTING THINGS UP to harm Bush's public image? (--the guitar photo op, the birthday cake photo op, while a large chunk of the US was getting blown off the map and thousands of American were dying; the cardboard "rescue center"; and this humiliation ("Can I go to the bathroom?") at a UN world conference. (It even makes me wonder about "My Pet Goat"--in retrospect.)

(I sometimes think that it is we, the American people, who are being psyopped--insulted, humiliated, given a low self-image, deliberately, by Bush's idiocy and blunders. Somebody shoving it in our faces. How dare you think you deserve any better than this inarticulete, drooling S.O.B.? It's a torture technique.)
