(Danish) Parliament demands Afghanistan torture truth

After new revelations in a case involving US forces mistreating detainees at Camp Kandahar in Afghanistan, a political majority is demanding that the defence minister explain just who knew what and when they knew it.

The demand comes after national daily Politiken reported that Colonel Frank Lissner, the former head of the Danish special forces in Afghanistan, had as early as 2002 learned of a Danish interpreter’s claim that he had witnessed US forces mistreating detainees under interrogation at Camp Kandahar.

The report has both opposition parties as well as government support party Danish People’s Party demanding that Defence Minister Søren Gade explain why Lissner has repeatedly said that he had not even heard rumours of the claims until 2004.

Just last week, Lissner reported to the parliament’s defence committee that despite being stationed at the same base as the interpreter, and despite meetings with the interpreter, he had heard nothing of the charges.
