Bloomberg opposes Roberts' nomination
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20050916/pl_nm/court_roberts_bloomberg_dc

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Friday opposed John Roberts' nomination to be U.S. Supreme Court chief justice, making him the first noted Republican to break with the Bush administration over who should lead America's top court.

Bloomberg, a former Democrat seeking re-election in a heavily Democratic city, said Roberts had failed to show a commitment to upholding the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision establishing a right to abortion.

"I am unconvinced that Judge Roberts accepts the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling as settled law," Bloomberg said.

Roberts' answers to questions in Senate confirmation hearings "did not indicate a commitment to protect a woman's right to choose," he said. "For that reason I oppose the nomination of Judge Roberts as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court."

13. He won't get my vote but
...all anti-Roberts voices welcome. Bloomberg sold his soul to the GOP too many times already and allowed the city to be infested with them at the 2004 convention.

7. I guess that's good
All my Democrat friends in New York City seem likely to vote him anyway.

The irony is, of course, that even if R v. W is tossed out, abortion will probably still be very easily accessible in NYC.

8. Bloomberg was a Democrat in 2001
he saw the Democratic field was loaded with other good people so Mike
Bloomberg changed his colors. He became a Republican so he could cam-pagin without opposotion and then with the Democratic in-fighting Mike
Bloomberg won by a narrow margin,i think it was about 17k votes....

10. No matter what else
it is irrelevant except to show that the issue won't be touched by anyone having real say over the confirmation. Obvious this "principled stand" plays well in NY. I don't think he is going to lobby hard against Roberts though, do you? He's made his local points. the only reason this is of note because of the absence of meaningful dissent against what logic must assume will be a terrible and long Chief Justice term as pre-determined by a very focused criminal entity.

11. Sounds like someone is trying to cement his lead in the polls
I'm sure that all of the Republicans in the Senate from New York will heed Mr. Bloomberg's advice.
