Judge blocks Missouri abortion law
Associated Press
09/16/2005

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A federal judge on Friday blocked enforcement of new anti-abortion law, ruling it would have forced an end to abortions in part of Missouri and created a general chilling effect on abortion counseling.

The temporary restraining order came just one day after Republican Gov. Matt Blunt signed the new law passed during a special legislative session. The governor had declared it "a good pro-life piece of legislation that will reduce the number of abortions."

The law requires doctors performing abortions to have clinical privileges at a hospital within 30 miles. It also lets parents sue people who "intentionally cause, aid or assist" their minor daughters in getting abortions without their consent.

U.S. District Judge Nanette Laughery ruled that the civil liability language "threatens an immediate chilling effect on all abortion counseling within Missouri and nearby states," in part because the language is too vague to know what actions could be targeted

3. Oh, let me guess--"The Right will NEVER revoke R v. W", right?
:eyes:

No, they won't outright overturn it. They'll just chip chip chip away at it peice by peice, year by year until it's practically moot because the only way a woman would be able to get an abortion is if she and her doctor meet the myriad of conflicting rules and regulations set up to prevent women from getting abortions, and preventing doctors from performing them

Fucking bastards.

5. I agree Heddi.
What good is Roe vs. Wade if you're a mother of five in rural Mississippi whose husband won't let you drive, and you have to travel 500 miles to a women's clinic out of state, and then come back two days later for the procedure?

Remember how we were told not to worry (you know us hysterical women)about parental notice laws because there was always a backup of judicial review? And now many judges are refusing to hear these cases, leaving teenagers raped by their fathers without recourse?

And let's not forget that the end game here isn't abortion, it's all contraceptives, as these Religious Reich groups have stated time and time again.

4. Any info on right wingers or their family getting secret abortions?
I know there's been a rumor floating for a while about Bush's girlfriend in the early 70's (unsubstantiated), but I'm sure there's got to be some other "pro-life" conservatives, substantiated.

9. Poor Matt "Skippy" Blunt!
All these laws he's been pushing through the Missouri legislature are getting overturned faster than he can sign them.

Before this latest one was overturned, the courts ruled against a law restricting adult businesses

Oh well. At least that saves money now that Skippy won't have to send his highway patrol troopers over to East St. Louis to get his copies of "Naughty Nymphets" and "Meter Maids in Bondage."
