Blanco to thank first responders, Bush in Saturday address
RAW STORY

Louisiana's Democratic Governor Kathleen Blanco, who early in the Katrina disaster had turned a cold shoulder to President Bush, will praise him for his handling of the disaster in the Democrats' radio address Saturday, RAW STORY has learned.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank President George W. Bush," she will say. "He has recognized that Katrina was no ordinary hurricane and that our federal government will have to help us in extraordinary ways. We are prepared to work as partners."

“Some issues reach beyond party," she'll add. "In the face of the human tragedy, which lies behind us, and the task that lies ahead of us, there is no room for partisan politics."

2. Just when I thought my day couldn't sink any lower.
I understand why she thinks she has to do this, but I don't understand why she has to be given a national pedestal upon which to declare that politics doesn't matter. With Karl Rove running the reconstruction of the largest city of her state.

"Congresswoman Susan Davis Moves to
Protect Wages of Hurricane Katrina Victims"

"Davis Endorses Legislation to Block the Bush Administration from Cutting Wages"

"Talk about hitting someone when they're down," said Davis, a member of the House Education and Workforce Committee. "While millions of Americans are opening their hearts and their wallets to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina, the Administration acts to undermine the ability for these victims to rebuild their lives. With criticism of racial and class insensitivity regarding the federal response to Hurricane Katrina, it's mind-boggling that the Administration would want to prevent workers from earning the prevailing wage."

5. The is doing the job for her state. She owes it to the evacuees to
get things as far back to "normal" as possible. The rest of the country can discuss Why? The victims need to start moving on. To interfere in their process of finding safety, security & some sense of normalcy if they can is 1) dangerous 2) unconscionable. It results in PTSD.

Of course the coercive WH will do all they can to squeeze what they need out of local politicians. The political campaign never ends for the neocons.

That's beyond the call of duty after he ignored the crisis until it was nearly too late. Her speech is just disgusting to any self respecting Democrat. And it will hurt her politically. It makes her look idiotic. She looks like a groveling fool. She is giving all Democrats a bad name.

his ass on any civilian on the ground.. that would be a crime. He knows it too - thus why they couldn't risk an audience last night.

19. Yeah, I am surprised he didn't have his usual soldiers at some
army base behind him instead of the cathedral. I bet the guv will write a book somewhere along the line about the hurricane and her total contempt for the bush administration and how they screwed up. But right now, if she wants her state rebuilt, she has to cooperate with him and his gang. That poor woman has to be biting her lips and banging her head against the wall but I don't see what other option(s) she has.

Edited on Fri Sep-16-05 09:58 PM by Charlie Brown
Blanco is governor of a solid Red State and gets a lot of her support from conservative areas outside of NO (she's also pro-life). She's also being used by the administration as a scapegoat. These circumstances make it imperative for the Democratic Party in LA to extend an olive branch to the opposition and try to work in allignment with the Feds.

Governor Blanco, who I've spent a lot of time defending, must do what she has to do.

She wants the Federal government to pay for the rebuilding 100%. Louisiana simply cannot afford to do something this incredibly extensive out of her own state treasury. Therefore Bush Inc. control the purse strings, so she unfortunately has to suck up and play nice.

Governor Blanco HATES the Bush bastard and this sucking up and playing nice is probably making her skin crawl. But for the sake of Louisiana, it's what she has to do, she has to praise the Narcissist and Ego-Maniac...I'm sure she has a plan though for when he stabs her in the back, because Senator Landrieu can tell Governor Blanco ALL about that.

34. "Her people" - like Kenyon(SCI), Halliburton, Bechtel, etc?
Seems to me like those are the people who'll benefit from *'s "largesse". I dislike how she went over FEMA to sign a no-bid contract with a *-connected company known for corpse dumping and a host of illegal and ghoulish activities that have shown they have absolutely ZERO respect for human remains. Frankly, I'm beginning to think Blano is a DINO.

11. The bigger question: why is she giving this talk at all????
Edited on Fri Sep-16-05 10:36 PM by Gloria
The bigger question is...why the hell is she doing the Democratic address on this at all? They didn't back her up in terms of the Katrina timeline, the GOP is screwing the with the money and cronyism...and she's trotted out to THANK BUSH?????

Give me a break! He was chatting up ole Haley and didn't call her. Bush snubbed LA....

So now, more of this nice nice with BUSH? Once again, the Democrats are enabling this creep even as a few of them try to point out the crap he's planning.

Why not address Roberts? Or the moves to undo all sorts of regulations with the Katrina excuse (clean air, for example). Why not demand real oversight of the $$? Why not address the upcoming moves to CUT programs??

For God's sake--what is wrong with the jackass Democrats??? Oh, we were supposed to wait until "everyone was safe" and then the gloves would come off....YEAH, RIGHT.

This is the Democratic leadership at work????? Assholes...

PS--Blanco turned a cold shoulder to BUSH?? WHAA? He snubbed her, showed up for his photo op without telling her....

They should keep her in LA...why go national with this crap?? Jeebus, it's bad enough when Clinton does it...

23. She needs to secure a promise from the White House NOW
That the Bush White House will not, WILL NOT, endorse the campaign of her opponent in 2007. Karl Rove with 200 billion in his hands makes me very nervous; some of that money is bound to find its way into the Louisiana Republican Party.

Haven't broken. I agree that they'll lift a portion of that $200 million and give it to their fellow crazy people...but any promise from Bush Inc. is worth lower than whale shit.

26. Characterizing this as "praise" is a real stretch
(The text of the address follows the sensationalized article) I'm glad I bothered to read what she actually said.

The bare mention of bush is buried and you can almost hear a "finally" when she said "he has recognized that Katrina was no ordinary hurricane". That's as far as she goes in referring to his involvement to date. Not even faint praise!

"Raw" sould save its fire for Republicans, or at least hold it until a Democrat has actually done something wrong.

29. Blanco needs to get her priorities in order.
The best way for her to do that is to tell Bush, publicly, to fuck off.

After all, it's far more important for her to give a cheap thrill to the keyboard cowboys and purists at DU than for her to get the funds and support she needs to rebuild a major part of her state. Isn't it?

33. How could she possibly state the human tragedy lies behind us? My
dog, woman, it has only begun for the now homeless, displaced low-income people. It's not like the "projects" are going to be rebuilt. The places that were rented for low payments will be rebuilt in a manner that will enable the landlords to command much higher rents.

If she caught the News Hour (Jim Lehrer) Friday night she would have also seen what the evacuees to Houston are facing. The preacher on there sure didn't think Houston could or should absorb them. His comments were really shameful coming from a Pastor.
