Poll shows Fletcher's approval rating drops
Associated Press

FRANKFORT, Ky. - Gov. Ernie Fletcher's job-approval rating has dropped to the same low level as shown for his predecessor who was embroiled in a sex scandal, according to a new poll.

According to The Courier-Journal's Bluegrass Poll, 38 percent of the public approves of the job Fletcher has done as governor, while 54 percent of Kentuckians disapprove.

The survey was conducted amid a special grand jury investigation into whether Fletcher's administration made personnel decisions on the basis of politics and not qualifications.

The latest poll put Fletcher's approval at the same level the poll showed for then-Gov. Paul Patton in 2003 - after Patton admitted having a sexual affair with western Kentucky businesswoman Tina Conner.

1. Bush's approval declines

President Bush's job approval rating by Kentuckians has slipped markedly since February to its lowest level since he entered the White House, according to The Courier-Journal's latest Bluegrass Poll.

And two out of three people polled believe the nation is seriously off on the wrong track.

Fifty percent of those surveyed approved of the job Bush is doing as president, a drop of 9 percentage points from a February sampling.

"I believe we're in a race to the bottom," said Jo Ann Shumate, 47, a Louisville social worker and a Democrat who was among respondents who agreed to be interviewed. "I don't think he's adequate for the job."
