Katrina Pushes Bush Down Further (Survey USA tracking poll)

Katrina Pushes Bush Down Further

A new Survey USA tracking poll suggests a "can't win" dynamic is unfolding for President Bush as he struggles to deal with the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina.

"The number of Americans who now approve of the President's response to Hurricane Katrina is down: 40% today compared to 42% before he announced the Gulf Opportunity Zone" in a speech last week. "The number of Americans who disapprove of the President's response to Katrina is up: 56% today compared to 52% before the speech."

Key point: "The more cash President Bush throws on the fire, as compensation for what some see as an inadequate initial response, the more it antagonizes his core supporters."

2. I thought the polls would go up slightly after his speech.
I'm glad I underestimated the american people. The people aren't buying Bush's crap anymore.

4. Easy answer to that one:
The Democrats hate him for the obvious reasons.

The Republicans are now starting to hate him because he now has the spending habits of Paris Hilton.

10. Yes since he will never raise taxes
he will spend SS money and military base money and even far RW types will get edgy at that.

20. Yes, but he hid it in a war...
killing people is an acceptable use of money. Rebuilding a city, however, is not.

He's not actually clever--just unprincipled and brutal: a schoolyard bully writ large.

11. That's how the Balkan totalitarian regimes fell
when the media quit supporting them and became independent of the State and then the security guards just walked away etc. That's what happens when you try to run a security state and the people finally get sick of lies and repression.

14. That's right!!! Someone else recognizes it!
That's excellent! I've always expressed my view that Rove is an unprincipled evil bastard who knows how to manipulate those who are malleable -- but certainly not a genius in any way. His time is over!

Other Repugs might, but BushCo has never given a rat's behind
what the people or even other repugs think about him.

18. Bush doesn't have to care about the polls anymore...Congress does.
And his plummeting numbers means that to survive in 2006, they've got to distance themselves from this massively unpopular President and the label "The Katrina Administration" as fast as ever they can.

even Rove himself won't be able to spin things.

23. The press got higher approval ratings than gw for their Katrina efforts
I think they learned something. And they probably decided it was good to be back in control of the news for a while. Maybe having a taste of this will keep them strong.

At last, Bush has a genuine, heroic-scale accomplishment to put on his resume! With all the power of the Presidency and GOP majorities everywhere, he screwed himself!

30. It was a huge mistake to think they could just set a backdrop
to Bush's speech last week and that that would prop him back up. The suit-less outfit in front of an obviously lit-up background immediately reminded me of his infamous "Mission Accomplished" speech on that carrier. People are finally realizing he's all hat and no cattle. - K
