Blown fuse cuts power at U.N. headquarters
http://www.sanluisobispo.com/mld/sanluisobispo/12688943.htm

UNITED NATIONS - A blown fuse cut power to the top 23 floors of the U.N. headquarters on Monday, sending nonessential staff home on the third day of the annual General Assembly debate.

Officials said there had been no threat against the building, and the debate continued uninterrupted. The U.N. Web site was down as was phone service in the 39-story tower on Manhattan's East Side.

Annan's chief of staff, Mark Malloch Brown, quipped during the lunch that the outage would give U.S. Ambassador John Bolton the chance to prove his claim, made 11 years ago, that it wouldn't make a "bit of difference" if the Secretariat lost its top 10 floors.

U.N. officials said a 4,000-ampere fuse blew out on the 28th floor and repair work would take most of the night.

10. On a 3 phase 480V feed, that's about 1/8 megawatt.
Surge could do it, Or loosten a few bolts on the fuse. A 4000 amp fuse is an expensive fuse too.

11. I bet it's pricey!
When I was still an engineer, the factory I was working had a lot of electrical heating elements, 480 three phase, and they had 600 amp fuses. They were pretty good sized - and pricey - I'd love to see a 4000 amp one! Must be about the size of one of those drive-up bank tubes.

12. Huh, on what planet?
P=I*E
P=480*4000
1.92 MW per phase. (480 Delta Conected assuming a power factor of 1)

13. Which is why you should never do math in your head
when your tired or drunk, I was both. :evilgrin:

Check my math, At PF=1 That's 3.33 MW with all three phases in play, Right? Delta's easy, though it may be Y to supply lighting loads.

Now, calculate the true PF for the top floors of the UN building & I'll be really impressed! ;-)

15. Fun! Throck stated single phase value, You got it right too
Edited on Tue Sep-20-05 03:57 PM by Syncronaut Seven
but failed to mention your value is correct only in a balanced 3 phase circuit.

I missed it by a full order of magnitude, you see, my mind only goes out to 6 places. :think:

That means I won, right? :rofl:

On edit: Thank god the boss isn't looking. That could have been an embarrasing error. :dunce:
