Anti-war mother's speech cut short
New York police: Group lacked loudspeaker permit

Tuesday, September 20, 2005; Posted: 11:02 a.m. EDT (15:02 GMT)

NEW YORK (AP) -- Police cut short a speech by anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan and arrested a rally organizer, saying he hadn't obtained a permit for use of a loudspeaker.

Sheehan, whose 26-day vigil near President Bush's Texas ranch sparked anti-war protests around the country, had nearly finished her speech Monday when police intervened.

Supporters ushered her away from the rally at Manhattan's Union Square park as onlookers yelled at police and chanted "Let her speak!"

Rally organizer Paul Zulkowitz was charged with unauthorized use of a sound device and disorderly conduct. He was given a court summons and released, said Detective Kevin Czartoryski.

Sheehan, whose son was killed in Iraq last year, is calling for the immediate return of troops from the region. Her 25-state tour is set to culminate Saturday with an anti-war march in the nation's capital

9. I called the Precinct last night
Edited on Tue Sep-20-05 12:00 PM by adigal
and told them my husband was a police officer in NYC and then a fireman for 10 years, and that this had better be BS what they did to Cindy Sheehan. He said it is being "totally misrepresented on the blogs" what happened and that since my husband was a cop and fireman, he knows how "rumors which have no basis in fact get started." I told him no one EVER accused my husband of manhandling a Gold STar Mother, so that is BS.

He gave me the number for the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information:

646-610-7800

NYPD Switchboard (646)-610-5000
13th Precinct (212) 477-7411

Please call.

Please call - let them know thousands of us are watching.

Sheehan Injured At Protest, Organizer Arrested

New York, NY (AP) – Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan said Tuesday she was hurt slightly in a scuffle that erupted when police broke up a rally as she was at the microphone.

...

“I was speaking and someone grabbed my backpack and pulled me back pretty roughly,” Sheehan said in a telephone interview Tuesday, referring to the rally Monday in Union Square.

“I think their use of force was pretty excessive for someone that didn’t have a permit,” said Sheehan, who said she was not roughed up directly by police but was jostled when officers broke up the rally and arrested organizer Paul Zulkowitz.

“I was shoved around,” said Sheehan, the grieving mother whose 26-day vigil near President Bush’s Texas ranch sparked anti-war protests around the country.

16. Yes, but there's ONE bright spot I found in here: look how she's FRAMED.
Look how often you see Cindy Sheehan referred to as "grieving mother."

VERY nice to see. Casts her immediately in a sympathetic light, it's two words - two VERY VIVID picture words that are easy to get the mind (especially the subconscious mind) around, so it's a quick hit for all those "don't do nuance" types. Almost, dare I say, Madonna-evocative (NOT THAT Madonna, the "Madonna-and-Child" original).

VERY good. frank luntz should be eating his heart out over that one. You can bet he's thought about this and is probably trying to figure out a counter-frame that'll stick. But it's AWFULLY hard to knock down the "grieving mother" meme. Makes you look like an absolute heartless CAD. Especially when "grieving mother" is what you see in print all the time. Repeated, you know, to kind of catapult the propaganda...

Dear God I HATE to see her man-handled and abused like that. HORRENDOUS. What a slap in the face. But I do take some comfort in this, I must tell you. She's locked in a lot of people's minds, whether they like it or not, as "grieving mother."

15. Typical NY cop...
has to rough up the mother of a fallen soldier that he claims to support...? I'm suprised (actually quite relieved) that they didn't shoot first. What's the going bullet rate for holding a rally in NYC without a permit? It was 41 shots for carrying a wallet in your back pocket. New York's "finest"?

I just don't know what to think about that. No one would return their calls. They knew they needed one.

And, I don't believe the police handled this well, at all.

23. Does that merit the police coming in and arresting people, shutting
down the peaceful assembly, instead of just having them turn off the the mic?

They can say that the person who assembled the gathering refused to turn it off, but I seriously doubt that.

19. I hope this is not the first step in Bush's plan to make an example of her
She has been treated with high disdain and disrespect. I hope Cindy will triumph, as obviously Bush doesn't want ANYONE to have the chance to question his vile actions as pResident. He's not all that Democratic, after all, no matter how much "democracy" he claims he's bringing to the rest of the world.

Peace activist Sheehan hurt at rally
September 20, 2005

NEW YORK --Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan said Tuesday she was hurt slightly in a scuffle that erupted when police broke up a rally as she was at the microphone. An organizer was arrested and charged with using a loudspeaker without a permit. "I was speaking and someone grabbed my backpack and pulled me back pretty roughly," Sheehan said, describing the scene at Manhattan's Union Square on Monday. "I was shoved around."

Sheehan, the grieving mother whose vigil near President Bush's Texas ranch sparked anti-war protests around the country, said wasn't roughed up by police, but was jostled when officers broke up the rally and arrested organizer Paul Zulkowitz. "I think their use of force was pretty excessive for someone that didn't have a permit," Sheehan said.

Paul Browne, spokesman for the New York Police Department, said Sheehan had finished speaking when officers arrested Zulkowitz, who had been repeatedly warned that he didn't have a permit. Zulkowitz was charged with unauthorized use of a sound device and disorderly conduct. He was given a court summons and released. Sheehan, whose son was killed in Iraq last year, is calling for the immediate return of troops from the region. Her 25-state tour is set to culminate Saturday with an anti-war march in Washington. She gained prominence when she staged a 26-day protest near Bush's ranch outside Crawford, Texas.
