Republican Bloomberg is opposite Bush - again

ASSOCIATED PRESS

For the second time in a week, Republican Mayor Michael Bloomberg distanced himself from the president, saying on Tuesday the Bush administration was wrong to suspend wage laws for workers helping to rebuild areas ruined by Hurricane Katrina.
Bloomberg sent a letter to President Bush asking him to reconsider his waiver of the 1931 Davis-Bacon Act, which sets wages for workers on federal contracts. The administration contends the move will reduce the rebuilding cost — $200 billion by some estimates — and helps open opportunities to minority-owned companies that do not historically contract with the federal government.

Since the administration announced the suspension of Davis-Bacon, Democrats have denounced the move, saying it will result in lower pay for workers. Bloomberg added his voice to that chorus on Tuesday.

"What we don't need is the specter of this already devastated region being reconstructed in a shoddy fashion and in a way that perpetuates the desperate cycle of poverty that has ensnared so many Gulf Coast residents," Bloomberg said.

1. Don't buy it.
He's a Republican, he's in so-blue-it-ain't-funny NYC and he's running for reelection.

I call BS.

4. Al Damatto did this for years
When election time came up be all concerned with the little guy and funding things that actually helped people and the instant the polling booths closed he was giving out the pork to his homeboys in the Nassau County GOP. It's a crude trick but it seems to work over and over and over again. Blomberg will be re-elected and within minutes will be back trying to give what's left of city treasury to his people.

16. He won't do it...
he'll only look at Ray Nagin, and see what happens. He's content to remain in the party of fascism.

And we've had it in NYC for some time... look what happened at the time of the RNC last year (which so many voters seem to have forgotten because the media is content not to remind them about it) and what happened to Cindy Sheehan a couple days back...

10. The truth of Bloomberg is demonstrated by his orders to the NYPD...
to break up anti-war demonstrations and arrest the leaders -- even demonstrations that have all the required permits -- just as reported here on DU, most recently yesterday.

New York City is the most staunchly pro-union city in America, and if Bloomberg wants to keep his job, he has to pretend to side with labor at least occasionally. Fascists do it all the time; remember the Nazi Party: the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP) -- which as soon as it came to power promptly threw all the German labor leaders in concentration camp.

in NYC display at least the same minimal political competence. That is what makes these cynical moves a "shrewd" cakewalk.

13. As I understand it, Bloomberg was a Democrat who changed
parties to run for mayor because he didn't think he could beat a powerful rival in the democratic preimaries.

15. Election year pandering...
Watch him toe the Bush line next year, when he's safe in his seat for another 4 years

And since he'll be term limited, watch him toe the party line again in 2007, and again in 2008, and then no need to pander in 2009 so he'll kiss up to Bush a little bit more then too...
