Reuters: New York Times to lay off 4% of workforce
NYT to lay off 4 pct of work force
Tue Sep 20, 2005 5:02 PM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Times Co. on Tuesday said it plans to cut about 4 percent of its work force and warned of lower-than-expected profits as it faces weaker advertising across its core newspaper operations.

The publisher of the New York Times and the Boston Globe said it would cut about 500 jobs over six to nine months beginning in October, including 250 positions at the New York Times Media Group and about 160 at its New England Media Group.

The reductions would include about 80 newsroom positions in total -- 45 at the Times and 35 at the Globe.

The company further warned that third-quarter earnings per share would be in a range of 11 cents to 14 cents compared with 33 cents a year earlier. Analysts on average had forecast earnings per share of 25 cents, according to Reuters Estimates.

4. To the Editors of the NYTimes:
Start telling the TRUTH again, and perhaps I will reactivate my subscription. However, as long as you insist on publishing tabloid rubbish and calling it journalism, I simply will not be able to support your paper.

Thanks,
ixion

5. She's going down like a $5 whore
Lost all credibility, joined at the hip with the neo-con whack jobs and crying crocodile tears over CIA Judy being in jail...but no one to weep with these bastards.

Don't worry about Krugman. He'll get published ....hopefully in a more prestigious paper.

13. IT's not prestigous but it's one of the most credible MSM paper we've got
Unfortunately, the survival of ANY kinda credibility in the MSM depends in turn on the survival of the NYTimes, Washingotn post and the few credible papers we still have. They aren't completely independent, but they're the best we've got. Without them, legitmacy in any term of the word will break.

7. It's outrageous, but maybe if they JUST reported the news...
and the WHOLE news, in the cold light of truth--without editorializing or "spinning" it, and without lazily retyping faxes from the White House--they might find that there are many people in this country who are starving for what they would offer.

I know that would never happen. I'm just sayin'.

9. Heads up NYT, reveal Judy Miller's source, and your readership might
increase. Lots of people (myself included) cancelled their subscriptions because of the NYT shameless warmongering and shoddy journalism leading up to Iraq.

14. So, it's uncontrollably funny that people will be laid off?
Do you think it's the white collar guys making the big bucks who will be laid off? Think again: it'll be the barely making it who will go from what is, after all, a business. Celebrate this only if you can also honestly celebrate layoffs from businesses you identify as hiring largely blue collar workers. Because THAT is who will be forced into poverty from this business.

15. Declining readership is problematic for most newspapers.
I must confess- I love Sunday mornings- I make a pot of coffee and read the Sunday NYT and W. Post from cover to cover, while watching all the talking heads on the Sunday shows. I don't want to see any of the major newspapers go down the tubes, and I worry about those folks that got laid off.

And yes, J Miller was apparently an irresponsible reporter. But the NYT is also home of Maureen Dowd and Frank Rich- cream for my coffee!

18. Readership is dropping everywhere. Even magazines are having trouble.
The small presses are closing by the hundreds. I'm not sure what is causing this but the economy might have something to do with it.

20. IMO, for all its faults, troubles at the NYT should not be...
a cause for rejoicing here. Their coverage of Whitewater/Monica, and their coverage leading up to the Iraq war, will forever stain the paper, but compared to most MSM, they are valuable. Look at LBN every day, and there are NYT articles with information and insight that otherwise would not see the light of day. Just one example is an article I posted yesterday, nearing 100 posts and on the Greatest page, about science museums preparing to defend themselves against assault from religious fanatics. And, there are the op-ed columnists, of course.
