NWA to layoff 1,400 flight attendants

Northwest Airlines Corp. will lay off 1,400 flight attendants over the next few months as it scales back its flight schedule in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the union representing flight attendants announced Wednesday.

The Professional Flight Attendants Association (PFAA) said Eagan-based Northwest wants to trim 900 attendants starting Oct. 31. The airline's Detroit hub will absorb 480 of the cuts, with Minneapolis-St. Paul taking the balance.

Another 500 layoffs are planned in January, though that number is subject to change, the PFAA said in a statement.

The cuts are the latest step in Northwest's efforts to become a smaller airline in Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The pilots' union said last week that 400 pilots will be laid off in coming months. Northwest also expects to shed some planes from its fleet.
