Jobless claims rise to 432,000

Jobless claims rise to 432,000 in week ended Sept. 17 from revised 424,000 in prior week (up to 424,000 from 398,000 initially announced last week)

September 22, 2005 UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Sept. 17, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 432,000, an increase of 8,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 424,000. The 4-week moving average was 376,250, an increase of 29,000 from the previous week's revised average of 347,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent for the week ending Sept. 10, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.0 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Sept. 10 was 2,666,000, an increase of 88,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,578,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,603,000, an increase of 23,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,579,250.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 343,793 in the week ending Sept. 17, an increase of 21,699 from the previous week. There were 275,846 initial claims in the comparable week in 2004.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during the week ending Sept. 10, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,319,107, an increase of 102,366 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.0 percent and the volume was 2,475,605.

5. this report is bullshit
they "revised" last week's claims from 398,000 to 424,000 - a difference of 26,000 claims - so that this week's number would appear lower than the "anticipated" number of 450,000.

This week's number is actually (well, kinda, sorta) 458,000

10. But those numbers look like they went DOWN w/Clinton & back UP w/BUSH....
that can't be true. That would mean that after Bush and the Republicans took power they've reversed yet another thing that Clinton was actually improving. :sarcasm:
