Hugo Chavez ships 1,000,000 barrels of petroleum
Edited on Thu Sep-22-05 10:27 AM by cal04
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Frias ships 1,000,000 barrels of petroleum to the United States

The Venezuelan Embassy in Washington D.C. issued a press release late this morning to inform that Venezuela President Hugo Chavez’ pledge to ship approximately an additional one million barrels of gasoline to the United States in the wake of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation will begin to come to fruition on September 25 with the arrival at Port Everglades (Florida) of the bulk tanker 'B/t Energy Pride' with a first shipment of 240,000 barrels. The gasoline, produced by Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) will be available immediately to US consumers through PDVSA’s wholly-owned US subsidiary, CITGO Petroleum Corp's distribution network ... and is supplementary to PDVSA’s normal shipments.

“As a Hemispheric neighbor and business partner, we are pleased that we are able to provide immediate relief by increasing gasoline supplies available in the United States in the aftermath of this devastating natural disaster,” said Venezuela’s Ambassador to the United States, Bernardo Alvarez Herrera. “We're sending additional barrels of gasoline that otherwise would have gone elsewhere, and we will continue to do whatever we can to help alleviate energy shortages and the dislocations faced by the people of the United States as a result of Hurricane Katrina.”

Three other shipments of 240,000 barrel each will arrive at regular intervals on the heels of this first. It is expected that the entire additional volume of close to one million barrels will be delivered to the US distribution system no later than October 31. Venezuela’s geographic proximity to the United States and PDVSA’s relationship with CITGO permits a much quicker response than could be achieved by other countries in Europe, the Middle East or Asia.

PDVSA is the 5th largest provider of petroleum products in the world and the 3rd largest provider to the United States. Over the last year, Venezuela has at times been the largest supplier of oil to the United States, surpassing Saudi Arabia, Canada and Mexico. It exports 95% of its hydrocarbons ... 57% of which are earmarked for the United States. PDVSA’S oil refining capacity globally is 3.3 million barrels per day.

23. I was thinking the same thing, Cassie
The individual stations aren't owned by Venezuela, only the brand name, distribution network, and refinery. So I bet we'll see the gas being sold at the 'regular' extortionate prices, or being 'requisitioned' by BushCo.

Pity Hugo can't specify that owners of Hummers and other gas-guzzlers have to pay a premium which will be used to reduce the price paid by those driving small efficient cars.

Don't look for George Bush to be as gracious in receiving it on behalf of the people of the U.S. It's just not in him. Besides that, how would it look thanking the man he has been trying to destroy for years? His racist, right-wing, lunatic brethren would look down on him, call him "soft on human beings."

51. No doubt Bush would have a hard time meeting his eyes.
There is another photo showing Chavez walking behind Bush and Mireya Moscoso, Bush ally, and President of Panama (who pardoned airline bomber/mass murderer Luis Posada Carriles to please the Miami right-wing extremist Cubans).

Bush doesn't deal directly with people like Chavez. It's so much easier to have his government covertly bribe Venezuelan corruptible military officers, union officials, and opposition members who want to destroy him.

I think that the price you pay for gasoline should be based on the mileage your car gets.

The less mileage your car gets, the more you should pay for gasoline...

52. This is a little off topic, but you have an excellent observation...
The less mileage your car gets, the more you should pay for gasoline...

Back in the 1970s I thought one way to address the "energy crisis" would be to charge $0.10 per gallon per cylinder (don't forget; this was mid-1970s when gas was around 60 cents a gallon). With this approach, motorcycles in general would have paid 20 cents a gallon, VWs and smaller cars 40 cents, mid-sized 60 cents, and the huge, gas-guzzling luxury cars $1.20. I thought this the best way to conserve and reward those of us who drove smaller, fuel-efficient cars. I proposed my idea on occasion to friends and co-workers at the time, and the response was lukewarm to outright condemnation. "You can't punish those drivers with large cars just because they were 'successful' in business!" was the most common rejoinder.

I still think it's a good idea, although now the price would be something like 40 cents a gallon per cylinder.

18. What is the critical difference between Venezuelan and U.S. elections?
We both vote electronically, but Venezuela has OPEN SOURCE CODE--i.e., anyone can review the programming by which votes are tabulated; whereas the U.S. has "TRADE SECRET," PROPRIETARY CODE in our electronic voting systems--code so secret that not even our secretaries of state are permitted to review it--owned and controlled mainly by two Bushite corporations, Diebold and ES&S.

Open source code = good president.

Secret, proprietary source code = bad president.

Simple.

-------

We need to throw Diebold and ES&S election theft machines into 'Boston Harbor' NOW! --or the nearest Louisiana levee, or Houston flood zone!

Transparent, verifiable elections require:

Paper ballots hand-counted at the precinct level (--Canada does it in one day, although speed should not even be a consideration, just accuracy and verifiability)

or, at the least...

Paper ballot (not "paper trail") backup of all electronic voting, a 10% automatic recount, very strict security, and NO SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code! (...jeez!).

------

We also need a BIG BROOM to sweep out corrupt election officials of both parties. The Republican Party is not the only one that needs its house cleaned!

67. Thanks for pointing out the extreme difference btween Republican
voting machines and the ones used in Venezuela. The Venezuelan opposition, as you know, attempted to convince the world their election was bogus and claimed their machines are like the Diebold ones, in an attempt to have the results disregarded.

All the difference in the world. No comparison. People need to see this explained, and push for transparency HERE.

Citgo officials scrambling to fine-tune Venezuelan leader's promise of cheap oil

When Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said on the weekend that he was going to open the taps on subsidized heating oil for poor folks in the United States, many assumed it was a drive-by comment aimed at raising the ire of his frequent critics in Washington.

But, as it turns out, Mr. Chavez is a man of his word.

Officials at Citgo Petroleum Corp. -- the Houston-based company that is wholly owned by Venezuela's state-owned energy company -- say they are scrambling to put the fine points on Mr. Chavez's promise to supply some of the poorest neighbourhoods in the United States with cheap heating oil this winter.

69. ding ding ding....we have a winner!
Chavez is doing a brilliant PR campaign. The more Chavez comes through for America and shows his genuine concern, the more benign Bush looks in comparison. Bush would look like a total ass if he started threatening Chavez now. Bush having to rely on his enemy for help must be killing him.

70. Hey-- Send some to Houston
We're out of gasoline-- really! When a gas station gets a shipment it's reported on the TV news, then cars line up 100 deep. The station needs the police to keep order.
