API says 28 pct of US refining capacity in Rita's path

WASHINGTON, Sept 22 (Reuters) - A total of 21 U.S. oil refineries that together account for 27.5 percent of the nation's refining capacity lie in the potential path of Hurricane Rita, the American Petroleum Institute said Thursday.

The storm, now packing 150 mile-an-hour winds as it takes aim at Texas, is likely to cause "serious" disruptions to U.S. crude oil and refined product pipelines, said the API, a trade group representing the largest U.S. energy companies.

...

The API urged American consumers to refrain from topping off their gasoline tanks to save fuel.

4. Gas went up 28 cents a gallon overnight with threats of $5 a gallon in the
immediate future and we're not supposed to top off our tanks?

Yeah. Right.

6. Most Offshore oil production is in a zone
about 150 miles out along the coast of Louisiana, with some extending west to Texas and a small amount offshore from Mississippi. As you can tell the Texas stuff is pretty much in the Bullseye and the Louisiana stuff is gonna get worked over by the North Flank of Rita but good. I bet close to one hundred percent is shut-in because of the combined effects of Katrina and Rita.

Ouch.
