Anti-war protesters pick up steam and take cause to D.C.
By John Ritter, USA TODAY

Cindy Sheehan, the "Peace Mom" who led anti-war protests near President Bush's Texas ranch last month, was virtually unknown a year ago. The U.S. body count in Iraq hadn't hit 1,000 and a solid majority thought the war was just. The anti-war movement seemed dead.

As activists converge this weekend on Washington, D.C., for what they hope will be the biggest anti-war demonstration since before the invasion of Iraq, a majority now tells pollsters the war was a mistake and wants the troops home.

(snip)

"People are reflecting on the Bush administration's callous response to the hurricane and asking what's all the money and material and people doing in Iraq when it could have been used to prepare here," says Bill Dobbs, spokesman for United for Peace and Justice, a sponsor of this weekend's Washington events.

Organizers expect more than 100,000 people for a march around the White House on Saturday. Sheehan is scheduled to speak. Rallies by war supporters are expected along the route.

2. I took issue w/ their statement that the middle class is just now
joining the antiwar movement, and wrote to tell them that it was their fault for trying to marginalize the movement and not recognize the wide age/income range of the movement.

8. Antiwar Protestors Going on Offense (MSNBC)

New ad campaign, weekend demonstration aimed at bringing troops home

WASHINGTON - Antiwar groups are using a $1 million ad campaign and a demonstration they say will attract 100,000 people to try to re-energize their movement and pressure the Bush administration to bring troops home from Iraq. Organizers of Saturday’s protest, which will take marchers past the White House, say it will be the largest since the war began more than two years ago.

Cindy Sheehan, the woman who drew thousands of protesters to her 26-day vigil outside President Bush’s Texas ranch last month, is among those planning to participate.

<snip>

Bush did not plan to be in Washington on Saturday, but he will have support on the streets. The groups FreeRepublic.com and Protest Warrior plan their own demonstration on Saturday, with hundreds expected to join in.

“We made a vow after Sept. 11 that we would not allow the anti-American left to do to us this time what they did during Vietnam, which was wear down the morale of the American,” FreeRepublic spokesman Kristinn Taylor said. Taylor said a larger rally Sunday on the National Mall would honor military families.

11. "to try to re-energize their movement"
I didn't know the peace movement needed to be "re-energized." Typical corporate bullshit.

Also enjoy the speculation that "hundreds" of freeper types will be on hand, when traditionally about a dozen morons show up to counter-protest.

13. Now you know if they named DU in that article...
it would be prefaced with "far-left" or "leftist" or at the very least "liberal." FreeRepublic, however, gets a mention like it is some kind of mainstream organization.
