Poll: Granholm, Stabenow still lead 2006 GOP opponents

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Gov. Jennifer Granholm's job rating this month dipped below 50 percent for the first time since she took office in January 2003, but she still holds a 20-point lead over Republican challenger Dick DeVos.

The poll released Thursday by Lansing-based EPIC/MRA shows 46 percent of the 600 likely voters polled gave the Democratic governor a positive job rating, while 49 percent gave her a negative rating and 5 percent were undecided. Granholm had a 52 percent positive job rating in July and a 54 percent positive rating in August in earlier EPIC/MRA polls.

The governor did far better in a poll released the same day by "Inside Michigan Politics" editor Bill Ballenger. In that poll of 600 registered voters surveyed Sept. 16 through Wednesday by Lansing-based Marketing Resource Group, 56 percent approved of the way Granholm was handling her job, while 34 percent disapproved and 10 percent were undecided.

Fifty-seven percent had a favorable opinion of Granholm in the EPIC/MRA poll, while 54 percent had a favorable opinion in the MRG survey.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan has joined a growing number of states to ban computer-assisted hunting under three new laws signed Thursday by Gov. Jennifer Granholm.

One of the laws makes it illegal to hunt using a computer to remotely control a firearm or crossbow or to operate a facility offering such an opportunity.

More than a dozen states are considering similar bans after a Texas businessman created a Web site designed to let hunters shoot exotic game animals or wild pigs on his private ranch. The site uses remote-controlled guns activated by clicking a computer mouse.

"Using computer technology to shoot at caged animals from a distance is a corruption of our proud hunting traditions," Granholm said in a written statement. "This practice is nothing more than a live-action video game."

3. He's a christian domionist and a crook

He'd have served time in a Canadian prison for tax fraud, if Reagan hadn't gotten him out of the charges.

He runs the company formerly known as Amway. As much as he has sponsored some good things in Grand Rapids (revitalized the old Pantlind Hotel, built the municipal auditorium that bears his name), the company was still founded on principals of greed, manipulation and fraud.

He and his family have been working for years to get a voucher system in Michigan schools, in order for taxpayers to fund christian schools. The voters slapped him down a few years back, when even former Gov. Engler wouldn't back the initiative. He would be disastrous for southeastern Michigan, and not just for Detroit.
